William V. Taylor Jr. is a published American author known for his book On Full Automatic.
He first became interested in writing back in 1986. Bill knew that writing would be difficult, mainly because when it comes to the craft he didn’t have any formal training. He began writing short stories of his own that did not have that much beauty but were authentic about the experiences that he had had in Vietnam. They were the stories that he had told his children when they had asked him what being in the war was like.
Things began to change when Joe Klein came into the author’s life. Joe was a political commentator in America and also served as a columnist for Time Magazine. He was also known as the author of the book Primary Colors.
Joe had been an editor for Rolling Stone Magazine and had recently glimpsed an article that existed in one of the newspapers in town regarding a veteran of the Vietnam War who had gotten into a shootout with the police in Hammond, Indiana. The result was that he had sustained fatal injuries. Joe thought that it would be prudent to investigate the story because of its interesting nature and also to find out what it was that had pushed the veteran over the line.
After some research had been done the story that he wrote came out and was titled “A Casualty of Peace”. The article made a big splash and it inspired Joe to write a full book that was titled Payback: Five Marines After Vietnam.
Bill was one of the first people that Joe got in touch with to be interviewed for the novel. Then when Joe talked about Bill’s ability to tell stories, Bill found that a seed had been planted in him and he wanted to write. To this day he has endless thanks for Joe for passing on those inspirational words to him and setting him on this path of being a full-time author.
When he was eighteen years old, his journey had started. Bill had decided to sign on with the Marines. He was part of a new unit that was supposed to surprise the NVA and the Viet Cong and utterly destroy them.
The unit that Bill belonged to was the First Battalion, Third Marine Regiment. Their goal was to make their way through harm to face up against the forces of the enemy wherever they were able to appear. They flew off a USS Okinawa helicopter ship, which was a converted aircraft carrier. In the battles that came, he was wounded three times.
However, the battalion was given two Presidential Unit Citations as a result of the battles that they fought in. These have also been given out in different battles of World War II. His battalion were involved fighting in twenty-seven various operations where he brought to light the bravery that was so hard fought for by so many.
Bill has gone through writing and re-writing as well as editing for years so that he could follow the path into history and promote the Marine Corps and his experience in Vietnam. It is the tale from a man who never intended to be a writer but was inspired to tell his own story. It is how he was transformed from a young man who didn’t know everything about the world to a survivor who had been through a lot.
It is the hope of the author that this diary of sorts will be able to forever preserve the memory of those brave Marines that he knew and served with. He also hopes that it will inspire other veterans from the military to think about their own stories and to tell them. He says that it is time that the stories are told to others and shared ‘before they are gone forever,’ according to Taylor Jr.
The author has also been a speaker, having appeared at Veteran’s Organizations as well as schools and speaking to audiences about the Vietnam War. He is a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the VFW, the Disabled American Veterans, the Marine Corp League, and the Third Marine Division Association. He has also been a chapter commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
