Upward Bound is a 2026 novel by Woody Brown. This fictional debut is one that readers won’t want to miss. Mona Simpson comments that the author ‘accomplishes the seemingly impossible’, while Rivka Galchen praises the novel as an ‘unparalleled achievement, and a treasure’.
This is a portrait of the lives that interlock with each other through their involvement of an adult day care center located in southern California. This is a community that is frequently overlooked, but Brown portrays it with wit, grace, and detail.
The place is question is Upward Bound. It’s not the type of place that anyone wants to spend their days in. The place is designed to serve the disabled community of Los Angeles but the dreary center is a last resort for many of the staff and clients who go there.
This extends to Carlos, a younger aide who lost his mother when he was young and now is an employee there along with his sister Mariana. It also includes Jorge, a large man who Carlos wants to make friends with and also keep from escaping. There’s also Tom, a gorgeous young man who has cerebral palsy who has a crush on Ann, the lifeguard at the pool.
There is also Dave, the director of the center who originally came to Los Angeles to act but now puts all of his passion into a holiday show featuring the clients of the center. All of these narratives come together and are connected in different ways, also featuring the testimony of Walter who has returned to the center after recently going through a family tragedy.
An incredible book that is creative and insightful, Woody Brown focuses on a community that is frequently invisible in society. Upward Bound is full of interesting characters and is an involving story that pulls the reader in from start to finish. Read this book to absorb it all for yourself!
