Alan Edward Nourse was an American science fiction author and a physician. He was also known for using the pen name Dr. X to write.
Nourse was born on August 11, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa. He would end up passing July 19, 1992 in Thorp, Washington.
He was known for writing science fiction for younger people and adults too, and also wrote nonfiction works about science and medicine.
He was born to his parents Benjamin and Grace and went to high school in Long Island, New York. He ended up serving in the U.S. Navy after the second World War. He attended Rutgers University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.
On June 11, 1952 he got married to Ann Morton in Lynden, New Jersey. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1955. He also ended up doing a one-year internship in Seattle, Washington at the Virginia Mason Hospital. Alan also ended up practicing medicine in North Bend, Washington for five years from 1958 to 1963. At the same time, he also began starting to go after his writing career.
The aspiring author was able to help generate funds to pay for his medical education through writing science fiction pieces for magazines. Even when he retired from medicine, Nourse found that he enjoyed writing so much that he kept up with it. He even had a regular column that he wrote hosted in Good Housekeeping magazine, which led to him getting the moniker of ‘Family Doctor’.
Alan has served as a friend of Avram Davidson, another author. Heinlein even dedicated his novel Farnham’s Freehold to him. Heinlein also partially dedicated his novel Friday to Ann, Nourse’s wife.
He is known for writing The Bladerunner, a book that ended up lending its name to the Blade Runner movie starring Harrison Ford. Despite this fact, none of its plot or characters were incorporated and these were used from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The Bladerunner was nearly made into a movie into the late seventies and William S. Burroughs was commissioned to pen a story treatment. Despite this, no film was ever made. The story treatment would later be released as the novella “Blade Runner (a movie)”.
Alan also used the pen name Al Edwards for his writing. Star Surgeon was recorded as a public domain audio book at LibriVox for readers who are interested in checking out the audio version of this sci-fi novel.

Not many people survive this pest, and the few survivors that are left are left in a race against the clock to do what they can to try and save the country and maybe even the world.
