Alan Edward Nourse was an American science fiction author and a physician. He was also known for using the pen name Dr. X to write.

Nourse was born on August 11, 1928 in Des Moines, Iowa. He would end up passing July 19, 1992 in Thorp, Washington.

He was known for writing science fiction for younger people and adults too, and also wrote nonfiction works about science and medicine.

He was born to his parents Benjamin and Grace and went to high school in Long Island, New York. He ended up serving in the U.S. Navy after the second World War. He attended Rutgers University and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1951.

On June 11, 1952 he got married to Ann Morton in Lynden, New Jersey. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1955. He also ended up doing a one-year internship in Seattle, Washington at the Virginia Mason Hospital. Alan also ended up practicing medicine in North Bend, Washington for five years from 1958 to 1963. At the same time, he also began starting to go after his writing career.

The aspiring author was able to help generate funds to pay for his medical education through writing science fiction pieces for magazines. Even when he retired from medicine, Nourse found that he enjoyed writing so much that he kept up with it. He even had a regular column that he wrote hosted in Good Housekeeping magazine, which led to him getting the moniker of ‘Family Doctor’.

Alan has served as a friend of Avram Davidson, another author. Heinlein even dedicated his novel Farnham’s Freehold to him. Heinlein also partially dedicated his novel Friday to Ann, Nourse’s wife.

He is known for writing The Bladerunner, a book that ended up lending its name to the Blade Runner movie starring Harrison Ford. Despite this fact, none of its plot or characters were incorporated and these were used from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The Bladerunner was nearly made into a movie into the late seventies and William S. Burroughs was commissioned to pen a story treatment. Despite this, no film was ever made. The story treatment would later be released as the novella “Blade Runner (a movie)”.

Alan also used the pen name Al Edwards for his writing. Star Surgeon was recorded as a public domain audio book at LibriVox for readers who are interested in checking out the audio version of this sci-fi novel.

He had gone through eight painstaking years of studying in the best medical center of the galaxy, and now it was all for nothing. All of the work he had done has resulted in one big failure.

Dal knows that he has what it takes. He’s worked so hard and he was at the head of his class. Despite all of this, he stands out from his medical colleagues in a big way. He was born on the planet of a distant star and as such is actually the first son of an alien race to actually try to be a qualified physician of Hospital Earth.

Pamela Tate is a Wilderness Patrol Officer. She is scouting in the Washington mountains when she sees a ground squirrel lying there in the dust of the path with blood coming out of its mouth. She bends down to touch it and it ends up being the last mistake that she will ever make.

There appears to be something wrong with this squirrel and whatever it has apparently has transferred to Pamela. In not more than 48 hours she is at her campsite lying there stone cold dead, with her body covered in welts and bruises. Meanwhile, a camping party across the lake settles into a state of silent horror as they become witnesses to the members of their party getting sick and dying horrible deaths.

There’s something out there, and it’s more deadly than any monster or animal you can see. With a foreign name, Yersinia pestis has arrived. Also known as the plague. Now an entire country is about to deal with this sickness that is once again on the loose.

Not many people survive this pest, and the few survivors that are left are left in a race against the clock to do what they can to try and save the country and maybe even the world. This sickness is invisible and anyone could have it. Could this be the entrance of the fourth horseman into the world, and is humanity ready for what comes next? Is there any way of stopping this thing or is it too late?
