A.A. Attanasio is an American published author. His full name is Alfred Angelo Attanasio. He also writes under the pen name of Adam Lee.

Attanasio was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 20, 1951. He is known for writing books in the fantasy and science fiction genres. Readers may know him from the Radix Tetrad, a series that started off with the sci-fi novel Radix in 1981. He has since written more series, novels, and an impressive number of short stories, essays, and novellas.

Today the author resides in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is not only a novelist but describes himself as a student of imagination. He says that whatever we name powers that light up our inner life, whether visions, fantasies, or hallucinations, he is fascinated by them. He also is interested by the ‘creative intelligence’ that writes the script for when we are dreaming. He enjoys bringing energy outside of his mind into the form of story, something that he believes defines who we are.

Attanasio grew up in New York City, while the Cold War was still going on. He recounts that a potential thermonuclear holocaust made believing in a future very difficult. As a result of all the fear and tension, Attanasio wanted to be in a peaceful place where he didn’t feel that his life was threatened. As a result, he read quite a bit and it’s when his passion for creative writing started. Being so close to the threat of an apocalypse sent him on a quest to the big questions, such as what reality is and where people go when they die. However, he found out that there were no clear answers coming.

While the moon landing happened when he was seventeen years old, he says that no one knew the origins of life or the cosmos. He says that there are various scientific theorems that prove that you cannot know reality. So the answers to the big questions are fantasies, and he started looking closely at stories and why it was that some fantasy stories feel more true.

He became a writer as part of his psychic journey, wanting to find himself. A.A. says that when it comes to storytelling, it’s a technique used for self-exploration and admits people into the bardo (a Tibetan concept) that means between existences. We make stories that serve to define us, and everyone does it, sometimes unconsciously. Stories that become part of society’s psychic fabric allow writers to find them and discover who they are as well as find out more about the world.

Attanasio writes fantasy and science fiction because they’re the ones that directly connect to the bardo the most, as they are up front about being imaginary. The honesty of this admission means that these genres, in the writer’s opinion, equal poetry in being close to the soul. He says that entertainment is symbolic action and soulful and when people are entertained or taken in by art works, they are no longer with just themselves but part of a shared space psychically with the artist as well as the ‘collective soul’. The first story tellers to sit by the fireside also had that goal of entertainment.

When this author is not busy writing or thinking about it, he takes some time to pursue other hobbies. One of these is hiking the Hawaiian Islands’ high trails. He loves to visit sacred sites and spiritually get lifted up from being in the same places where people told stories that were entertaining and had the ability to define them. Islanders carried on an oral tradition, with many stories disappearing before writing was introduced. When he is among ancient shrines and their stone ruins, close to the same vistas that were able to inspire forgotten myths, he is able to feel writing’s grace and power.

A.A. Attanasio is the creator and the author of the Radix series. This series started with the debut novel, Radix, in 1981. It was followed by In Other Worlds in 1984. Arc of the Dream would be the third novel in the series, coming out in 1986. In 1989, the fourth book of the series was published, titled The Last Legends of Earth.

Carl Schirmer is the main character in this story. One evening, he spontaneously combusts while in a bathroom in Manhattan. His body turns into light thanks to alien intelligence that’s located in the future (130 billion years). At that time, space and time is ending. It’s collapsing into a black hole– the Big Crunch.

Carl is built again from light remains by the aliens for a purpose. He wakes up in the Werld, the last world of time. At infinity’s edge he finds nomadic humans called the Foke. They make their way among the Werld’s floating islands. They teach him about life and love. Then he falls for his guide, Evoë.

They live in a kingdom where no disease and aging exist. But then she is affected by the zōtl. It is a spider-like intelligence that feed off the chemical results of their pain. They seek out the Foke for this reason. Carl must get back billions of years to the Earth he knows to save her before she dies. But will Earth be the same as when he departed? Can he accomplish his goal and keep the zōtl from finding him and attacking Earth? Read this novel to find out!
