A.W Hartoin is a Middle Grade, Mystery and Young Adult Fiction writer. She grew up in Missouri, in a rural area. She says she can’t remember a time when she didn’t love to read a lot of different stories. Harry and the Lady Next Door is the first book she read like a thousand times, so you could say it is her favorite book. When she was a little girl, she was very curious and creative, imagining constant stories about almost everything.
She really enjoyed visiting her grandmother, who lived in the Central West End area of Saint Louis. This place was astonishing for her, because it was filled with beautiful and big houses, according to her, every of them were unique. She liked to imagine a story for each house and, at the same time, was sure there was something amazing behind every door and every wall. It was many years later when the family grew, meanwhile, she was the only granddaughter, she was allowed to do anything she wanted, such as exploring every corner of the house. According to her biography on her website, that is how her Mercy Watts series and her “Away from Whipplethorn” series were created.
When she was older, she decide to join the Air Force, because she had the belief that if she was going to be a great write, she had to gather more a lot more life experience. She needed to learn about the world and the people, so as to create good and unforgettable characters. It is true the life teaches us more than books and school, and living are the main fuel for a writer and she knew that. Actually, it was the best education she had received ever.
During her service, she met the man who became her husband. Together, they went around the world, knew many places, people and different cultures from all around the world. They lived in Alaska, Italy and Germany; finally, they settled down in Colorado, where she lives with her family and her pets: a Great Dane, a Cat and six “bad” chickens.
She is known for her different books series, every of them aimed at a diverse audience. She is not really a fan of horror genre, but writing mystery is one of her passions. She also has interest for magic; in fact, her series “Away from Whippletorn” narrates the adventures of Matilda Whippletorn into a magical journey, more than a thirteen years old girl could imagine living. Actually, her stories: “Flare-Up” and “A Fairy’s Guide to Disaster”, from the Whippletorn series are described by the readers as the best fairy book ever. Besides the excellent writing, one of the most attractive features of this series is the suspense she keeps along the every book. In addition, her writing is so detailed and descriptive, that it is so easy to imagine the entire story as it was a movie. This is a good characteristic, especially for those new readers, who are not used to complicated grammar constructions. Furthermore, the story is so catching that you do not want it to end. For those who like magic and mystery, this is a good recommendation.
Her books introduce very young protagonists living amazing adventures that make you want to be them. The realism among the fiction she manages to create is impressive. Her books series are attractive to young people, craving to live endless ventures and for adults, who might think life is too short to hesitate, because you can only live once. For many young people, the Mercy Watts series is one of the best mystery novels of the decade, a must-read number that must be added to your bookshelf.
When we want to read something different, we can get into Mercy Watts’ world and follow her through her mystery solving journey. When you notice some details about Mercy, you might say this character is inspired in herself, during her vacations at her grandmother’s in St. Louis. Also, the girl’s quests could be related to the author’s journeys around her grandmother’s house; it is necessary to mention the excitement of the fanatics, who have been following the stories of Mercy Watts since they were just short tales. The ability of A.W Hartoin to give life in her books to loveable and unique characters, through a mystery story with some humor is remarkable and guarantees you will attach to it until the very end.
On the other hand, it is really difficult to get in the shoes of a fourteen years old boy, especially for a grown up woman; however, this is the challenge Hartoin accepted when decide to write “It started with a Whisper”, one of the books of the Sons of Witches series. Many critics affirm the following: “If magic were real, it would be as described in those pages”. In this occasion, the author takes us back to a world of magic, but from a distinct perspective: Puppy and the McClarity clan. Puppy and his uncanny family are the protagonists of this book series, when they turn back to the past to reach their ancestors for aid and hope he grants their wishes, after being harassed by his teacher all year long, Puppy decides to follow his family’s steps and comes to Ernest with just one wish: to take care of the obnoxious math teacher, who has been all over him. He just wants her to leave him alone on the last day of schools, that is his only wish and it might come true, and that happens because in the McClarity clan, wishes are a real thing, especially when it is something you really want.
With the writing skills, A.W Hartoin takes us to a world of magic, then we find ourselves solving a lot of mysteries with the smart Mercy Watts, and then we are taking back again to the magical reality to get into the eyes of a boy who belongs to a family with supernatural powers to make any wish come true; but, what can we wish for when we are having such an incredible literature works to dive us into marvelous adventures?
