888 Love and the Divine Burden of Numbers is a 2024 contemporary fiction book by Abraham Chang. If you have been looking for a new read to pack along with you for summer or want to share this book with your book club, this novel may be a great pick!
Main character Young Wang has gotten tons of wisdom from his uncle who he looks up to and cares about a lot. His uncle always told him to not take life too seriously, to get out on the road while you’re able, and to remember that each person in life gets seven great loves– so you should try not to blow it.
The last piece of advice is something that means a lot to Young. He has always obsessively cataloged his life in terms of favorite albums and movies watched, and has filtered all of it through Chinese numerology and superstition. Young Wang is able to discover meaning in just about everything and his two best friends are constantly teasing him about this.
At the end of 1995, Young is at New York University. There he runs into Erena. She is someone who is quick witted, charismatic, brilliant, and very funny. The two fall in love and Young feels that their connection is so wonderful and real that he is simultaneously terrified and thrilled. It’s like something that he is obsessed with but also feels scared about losing in the future.
The two’s relationship continues to grow and as it does the reader gets the chance to see different flashbacks to the first five loves that Young has. This lines up Erena as being the sixth. He is concerned that his uncle is right and that there are indeed seven real loves that one has in life. If Erena is in the sixth slot, it means that she is either his one and only and his uncle is wrong or that it is only a matter of time before the relationship disintegrates and some more room is made for Young’s final love.
This is a wonderful tribute to all that has do with Western pop culture, Eastern traditions, and being a first generation New Yorker. This is an incredible debut that reminds the reader that luck can only take you so far when it comes to matters of the heart. Read this debut from Abraham Chang and find out more!
