Adam Bradley is an American professor, published author, editor, and literary critic. He is known for his books on pop culture. He has written on everything from Ralph Ellison to hip hop music.

Adam Bradley was born in Utah in 1974 in Salt Lake City. His family moved to Los Gatos, California, where he was enrolled in public school there in the first grade. His teacher told his mother that despite the fact that he was nice, he should probably be held back. His mother ended up deciding to pull him from school and ended up moving back to Utah to be with her parents.

The author was schooled at home by his educator grandparents until he was old enough to go to high school. He attended high school in Salt Lake City and graduated. He would go on to study in Portland, Oregon at Lewis & Clark College and graduate with his Bachelors degree in the subject of English.

While he was a student at this college, he was a research assistant to his friend Professor John Callahan. He would be named soon after the literary executor for Ralph Ellison. When this writer passed away in 1994, he left manuscript pages and files in the dozen. Lots of them referred to his second novel that would follow in the footsteps of his classic novel Invisible Man.

Bradley would have access to these manuscripts that had never been published. As a result of working with the writings of this author, it was a formative experience. Adam decided that he would go to graduate school and study English for the purposes of being able to work further on the author’s papers with Callahan.

He would attend Harvard University and earn his Ph.D in 2003 in English, just like he wanted. There he studied with Cornel West and others before graduating. He received a fellowship to go to Dartmouth College and accepted it. After that, he went to California to be an assistant professor at Claremont McKenna College.

Adam Bradley’s work has appeared in a variety of publications that include the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and more. Ever since 2009, he teaches English as an associate professor at the University of Colorado, where he has tenure.

In Boulder, he also is the director of a lab for race and popular culture, known as the RAP Lab, which he founded himself in 2013. The lab is a space to exchange ideas where pop culture and race intersect. Bradley says that one of the initiatives offered by the lab is a program that brings hip hop and rap music to the classroom in middle and high school to enhance interest in the students regarding the language arts.

Ralph Ellison in Progress was first published in 2010 by Yale University Press. The book is an extraordinary look into the mind, life and works of one of the greatest American authors in the history of the country. Even though he would end up only publishing one novel in his career, he can be counted among the most important African-American voices in the twentieth century.

Bradley dives into the career and life of Ellison full force in this cerebral and engaging work. Ellison came out with Invisible Man in 1952. After that he did quite well, enjoying a career writing letters as well as ending up publishing not one but two essay collections. The author would also teach at universities and colleges and went on to write many pieces that would go on to be published in various magazines and newspapers.

All of this time, Ellison was spending forty years and more working on his second novel. Unfortunately the novel was partially destroyed thanks to a fire that broke out in 1967. However, the writer had pages in the thousands written out for the novel that were left when he passed away. Some of them did end up being collected and published in a book later.

Many may think that they know this famous author, but do they really? In Progress takes a look at the terrain of not only this author’s unpublished second novel and the one that did make it to print. Bradley makes the assertion that if you can understand the composition process of this author you can observe truths about the author but also writing, race, and the topic of identity as an American.

This author crafts a scholarly look at the life and mind of this author based on his drafts, journals, notes, and typescripts. If you are interested in the life and legacy of Ralph Ellison, this is a book worth checking out.
