Adam Johnson is one of the Pulitzer Prize winning author from America who has written many successful short stories and fiction novels is his writing career. He is particularly famous for writing down the novel The Orphan Master’s Son, for which he has won the Pulitzer Prize in the year 2012. Apart from being a novelist, Johnson also works as a lecturer of English at the Stanford University and focuses mainly on creative writing. He was born on July 12, 1967 in South Dakota and was brought up in Arizona. Before going on to explore his writing abilities, Johnson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Arizona University in Journalism in the year 1992. Later, he obtained his MFA from the McNeese University in a writing program in the year 1996 and a PhD from the Florida Univesity in the year 2000 in the English subject. Currently is based in San Francisco as a well established author and an associate professor of creative writing at the Stanford University. Johnson is also popular for laying the foundation of the Graphic Novel Project at the Stanford University. For his tremendous contribution towards novel writing and teaching creative writing to the aspiring authors, the Playboy Magazine has labelled him as one of the most imaginative and influential college professors of the nation.

As a writer, Adam Johnson rose to fame with his novel, The Orphan Master’s Son. This novel not only became successful and established him as a well known writer, but was also praised by a number noteworthy critics for its unique story and plot development. It was declared as a remarkable and daring novel that helps to give a clear window about the mysterious North Korea kingdom, by Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times. Johnson has also given an account of the love and sacrifice of the people of North Korea. Johnson says that he was interested in the topic due to the his sensitivity toward the language of propaganda. Besides this, he has also written a number of short stories and has won numerous awards for them. Many of the written works of author Johnson have been translated into a number of foreign languages such as Dutch, Spanish, Hebrew, French, Romanian, Japanese, Serbian, German, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, and Catalan. Most of his novels focus on the influential characters who appear to be on the edge of the society and are permanently isolated and disconnected. The novels are often described as having a sense of confusion and adolescent alienation, and combined with the awareness of the randomness present in life and the difficulties in making and maintaining connections. Due to these kinds of descriptions of his novels, author Johnson has often been praised as a writer of futuristic heights of fancy and the anaerobic culture of America, illustrating the real and current facts and meanings of life. Several elements of absurdity in some of his written works have caused them to be described as funky and new science fiction which seemed partly ironic. Because of the immense success of the novels, author Johnson has won many literary awards throughout his writing career.

One of the initial novels written by author Adam Johnson was published under the title ‘Emporium’. It was released by the Penguin Books publishing house in the year 2002. The plot of this novel deals with events in the lives of the primary characters set in Los Angeles. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the author has described a number of events taking place which play an effective role in the changes happening in the lives of the people of Los Angeles. At first, at ATF raid takes place, followed by a failed moonshot. The other compelling terrains explored by author Johnson in this electrifying debut novel include the loads of female cancer patients who seem to be determined to live the remainder of their lives to the fullest. He has also described a love stricken Cajun girl in her teens, a teenage sniper living on the payroll of the LAPD, a bulletproof vest salesman of the post apocalyptic time, and a gay astrophysicist from Canada, all of whom try to seek connection and some meaning in the uncertain landscapes made by the voids which can only be filled by their lovers and parents. Author Johnson has his verbal acuity and imaginative grace to describe a satirical plot without even being cold. He has also depicted heartbreaking without the elements of sentiments. With the help of these descriptions, Johnson has tried to reveal the lonely isolation of the self help society and shows how they get bound together.

One of the other novels written by author Adam Johnson was published under the title ‘Shake Girl’. It was released by the Random House, Inc., publishing house in the year 2008. The plot of this novel revolves around the life of a woman, who has suffered oppression, genocide, and poverty throughout her life, has somehow managed to live through it. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that she has been raised in the middle of genocide, due to which she had to face poverty and oppression which plague the streets of the Phnom Penh. At the time of such crisis, she tries to keep her family together by working as a karaoke singer. She also tries to fulfill her dreams of going on to become a dancer. But, she feels that the chances of her success were quite slim due to the condition of the women in the society at the time as they were considered to be second class citizens. Also, the corrupt officials of the city try to make things difficult for her as well as for other women of the city. The matter becomes even more dangerous for her when she is caught advancing between a married man and the murderous attempts of his wife. Author Adam Johnson has written the novel based on true events and has created it with the help of the teachers and students of the Stanford University, who were a part of the Graphic Novel Project founded by him. Also, Johnson was able to finish the book in just 6 weeks with the design and illustrations of the tragic events. With the help of the lyrical narrative and the raw imagery, the novel proved to be a groundbreaking and powerful achievement that has appealed to the readers all over the world.
