Adrian Barnes was a published British author. He was born in Blackpool, England on April 7, 1963, but moved to Canada where he grew up in Vancouver.
Growing up in Canada, Adrian felt that he was ‘buried in suffocating suburbia’, a fact that he said made him angry and fueled his flight to the city at first but then to the rural climate of mountainous West Kootenay section of British Columbia, a place where he said that people ‘mostly live like human people’.
Adrian attended Manchester Metropolitan University, where he graduated with an MA in creative writing. He also taught at Selkirk College, instructing students on creative writing and English. While alive, he operated his own chain of online newspapers and wrote novels. Nod is his first published novel and it was released in 2012. It was nominated for a 2013 Arthur C. Clarke Award.
Adrian passed away January 5, 2018.
Nod is the debut fictional novel from Adrian Barnes. If you have been looking for a science fiction book that will keep you up at night, check out this book that Slate called the ‘creepiest book of the year’ and see what you think!
A pandemic of insomnia ends up terrorizing the people of Vancouver in the near future in a dystopian nightmare that fans of end of the world or apocalyptic stories will be sure to appreciate.
When dawn comes for the city of Vancouver, so does the realization that nearly everyone in the world has not been able to get to sleep the night before. Nearly no one has been able to get any significant rest over the course of the night.
As it turns out, there are still some people who can sleep, but it’s about one in ten thousand. The ones who have been able to get some shut eye have all shared the same dream between all of them. There is as of yet no explanation for what this means.
After six days of being completely sleep deprived, people are going to experience psychosis. After four weeks of going through everything, the body is going to die. But before that can happen, in the time leading up to it, everyone starts to panic.
Out of all of this chaos, a strange new world starts to emerge. Suddenly those who were existing on the fringes of society are about to take the lead on everything. Then there’s Paul, a writer. He is able to sleep, and keeps on sleeping while his partner Tanya starts to fall apart right before his very own eyes.
The new world is coming, and it is eclipsing the old one entirely. What will end up happening and can the old world ever come back again? Or is it already too late for anything to be done? Find out by getting a copy of this dystopian thriller that will have you up late into the night, turning the pages to see how it ends!
