Publication Order of Standalone Novels

An actor, a film producer and a writer in equal measure, the American author Adriana Mather is a highly versatile and gifted novelist with an articulate and coherent style that speaks directly to her young audience, as she primarily focuses on the ‘young adult’ genre and demographic, with many of her stories revolving around the supernatural, as well as a number of other elements as well. With a rich and varied background and an extremely colorful family history, she has a huge well of inspiration from which to draw from, building her exciting and in-depth worlds that draw the reader in through her mixture of warmth and humor. Knowing and understanding her younger readers, she speaks in a fun and accessible manner that they can relate to, never condescending to them, and always keeping it witty, entertaining and engaging throughout.

Her ability for understanding what readers are looking for comes, in part, from her time working in film, as she also has a highly expressive manner of writing, putting herself into it almost. This can be related to her also working as an actress, a talent which she has easily transferred over to the page, with her ability of getting inside the characters and show what really motivates them. Owning a film production company as well, she is constantly busy, maintaining a strong presence in a number of different creative industries, making her a highly unique and prolific storyteller. Clearly understanding narrative structure, she is able to bring the scenes together seamlessly, making the story come alive on the page for the reader. She is also able to conjure up a sense of magic, making the supernatural seem somehow normal, as the reader feels themselves transported to another time, the characters each resonating with them. Taking a sense of historical accuracy as well, she is able to bring a touch of realism to her subject matter, something which keeps her work well grounded throughout.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in America, Adriana Mather was to be the 12th generation of Mathers that have settled there, something which would come to influence her writing heavily over the years. With her family previously being involved in the Salem Witch Trials many generations back, along with the Titanic, The Mayflower and the Revolutionary War, she had a vast amount of stories to draw from. This history can still be seen reflected within her work today, as she keeps the past alive, bringing it a whole new audience and generation of readers both young and old.

Acting from a young age, she was always interested in storytelling, whether it be through acting, film, or literature, as she pursued her passion for the form. Building upon this over the years, she would undertake a variety of different roles, all of which would allow her to express herself creatively, as she honed and refined her voice as a writer. Still writing to this very day, she puts out work at a regular pace, with a lot more expected in the near future, as it doesn’t look like she’s stopping any time soon either.

Writing Career

Making her literary debut in 2016 she released her first novel titled ‘How To Hang A Witch’, a title which was also to be the first in her ongoing series under the same name. Featuring many elements that have always been of interest to her, Mathers takes a look at witchcraft throughout the ages, updating the Salem Witch Trials for a modern contemporary audience. This would also feature many elements drawn from her own life and put back into the work, allowing it to come alive in the process, with its rich and vibrant world-building.

Running her film production company called ‘Zombot Pictures’ which she co-owns, she works as producer on a number of films made there. Working as an actor as well, she previously starred in the film ‘Chasing Shakespeare’ alongside Hollywood actor Danny Glover, along with starring in a number of her own films. This is something that’s expected to continue on into the foreseeable future alongside her writing career, as more and more readers, both nationally and internationally, discover both her films and novels every day, with her career growing from strength-to-strength for many years to come.

How to Hang a Witch

Originally brought out through the ‘Knopf Books for Young Readers’ publishing label, this was brought out to much acclaim when it was first released, it being the debut novel from Adriana Mather as an author. Released on the 26th of July in 2016 it was also the first in the ongoing series of ‘How to Hang a Witch’ novels; a franchise which was to be a set of books set firmly within the young adult mold. It also managed to establish the leading characters, as well as providing a self-contained story and narrative that moved along nicely with ease.

Set in Salem in Massachusetts it sees one Samantha Mather moving there from New York City, as she attempts to make a new home for herself. Coming into contact with a group of girls at her school who call themselves ‘The Descendants’ she immediately finds herself their enemy as they descended from the witches themselves. This is exacerbated by the fact that she herself is a descendant of Cotton Mather, a man responsible for the trials all those years ago, as they seek to undo a centuries old curse. Will they come together to tackle the curse? Who, or what, is behind it all? What will become of them as they discover how to hang a witch?

Haunting the Deep

Brought out through the ‘Knopf Books for Young Readers’ publishing house once again, this was set to be a direct follow-up to the first title. Working as a sequel to ‘How to Hang a Witch’ it is the second book in the series of the same name, as it manages to take the story and the characters forwards. Not only that, but it also provides some fun twists and turns of its own along the way, always keeping the reader guessing right until the very end.

Surviving the curse of the previous novel, Samantha Mather now finds that her family connections has an impact on her social-life. Not only that, but she’s also having dreams about the Titanic and walking the decks with her uncle and aunt. With the help of ‘The Descendants’ she must now find out how to escape from being drawn into the dreams and going down with the ghostly ship. Will she be able to escape it all? What will become of her and the new heartthrob Elijah? Who is haunting the deep?

I loved How to Hang a Witch and Haunting the Deep! Please tell me there is going to be another book in this series. Haunting the Deep left me on a cliff with Elijah and Samantha and the girls talking about starting their own gig with helping spirits. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping this wasn’t the end.
