She knows precisely what it is that she wants to say, right down to the each and every character, something which is elaborated through her use of plot-lines and narratives. This is something that she also highlights with her self-aware use of genre and all its many tropes and cliches, as she turns them on their head making them work for her. With a background in history, something which stems from her parents both being deeply immersed within the field as well, creating a strong sense of accuracy within her stories as well. Over time she has used this to create a number of series and franchises, such as the ‘Garth and Gwen Medieval Mysteries’, along with ‘The Lion of Wales’. One that she is extremely well known for, though, is that of her highly popular ‘After Cilmeri’ series of novels, as it is also perhaps one of her most successful too. Infusing science-fiction with history, this Young Adult time traveling series of novels see young time travelers travel back to previous eras and alter time in order to save the world. Using the historical backdrop of Wales in England, it also incorporates a lot of knowledge of the area and what it was like back in the medieval times, as well as the language use. Adding a major degree of authenticity to the proceedings, it really works at developing the world making it more in-depth and deeper in the process, creating a deeper more refined world. Along with the characters themselves, it also allows the reader to become drawn in through how grounded they are and how they interact with each other on a very real level. Having fun with the cultural difference of the time-travelers as well, it really manages to provide a certain level of entertainment within the action too. This keeps readers hooked as, whilst the story can become complex in later installments of the series, it still retains a certain level of humor and creativity to in order to keep it accessible and engaging. With more installments coming out as well, it’s always kept fresh and inventive, with fans worldwide clamoring for each book with eagerness and anticipation, something which will continue for some time to come.
Running for over fourteen books so far and counting, this particular series started all the way back in 2011 with the title ‘Footsteps in Time’. Since then there has not only been fourteen books, but a number of novella titles as well, all intended to slot into the overall narrative in-between titles. Along with this there have been a number of compendium editions of the series collecting together the books in large collections, as the series and overall franchise continues grow for some time yet.
Footsteps in Time
Brought out by Sarah Woodbury herself, this was to be the first in the ongoing series of ‘After Cilmeri’ novels, allowing her to market it all herself. Creating a sense of excitement around them word quickly spread, as they fast became the most sought after books, with each title generating a buzz upon its publication. Released in 2011 on the 22nd of January, this book managed to establish the setting, premise and tone of the series to come, along with many of the principal characters, as it set-up the style and the overall tone that was to be expected as well.
Taking place in 1282 this sees Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the Prince of Wales, when he was ‘supposed’ to be ambushed and murdered by English soldiers. That was when his death was set to mark the fall of Wales as an independent nation, followed by over seven hundred years of English rule under the English boot. Looking at what could have happened, though, had he not not died upon that fateful day, it sees two teenagers from the 21st century go back in time to put a stop to the assassination and change the course of history in the process. Will they change things for the better? How will it affect history overall? What impact will be left by those footsteps in time?
Prince of Time
Released by Sarah Woodbury herself once more, this continues on from the last title, picking up directly from where it left off. Also published in 2011 on the 22nd of January in conjunction with the first, it was released in order to generate some buzz for the overall series. Developing the characters and the story it manages to build upon what came before, whilst also keeping what made the first one work so well.
With David and Ieuan, David’s man-at-arms, now both on the run, they must evade capture from the English forces. Swearing vengeance for the death of their king, the English soldiers are out for blood. Llywelyn lies on his deathbed hurt by the arrow of a traitor, whilst David and Anna seek to prevent the nation of Wales from falling. Can they manage it? Will the English soldiers catch up with them? What will become of the prince of time?
The After Cilmeri Series
Definitely knowing and understanding its audience, this is a series that really manages to make the most of its material, clearly comprehending its genre and format. Keeping things moving at all times, there’s never a wasted moment within each title, as Woodbury really draws out every conceivable idea, whilst also ensuring that there’s plenty of surprises along the way. As more and more fans discover the series every day, it looks like there’s a lot of life left in the series yet, as it will continue to grow for many years to come.

Being a Welshman and knowing our History this is a great escape from reality where you know the names of the people and the places but with a great twist that draws the reader in. I look forward to reading them all.
These are just the most wonderful books to escape. Ms. Woodbury knows how to pull the reader into her storylines. You become part of the story and at the end of each book, she is able to make one wish the new book is ready to read. She understand human behavior and cultures. And why not, she is also an Anthropologist.
