More Than a Label: Why What You Wear and Who You’re With Doesn’t Define Who You are is a 2002 book by Aisha Muharrar. If you’re looking for a good nonfiction book to read and you’re not really picky when it comes to what it’s about, consider this interesting book that is put together from a survey of over 1000 people and teens, involving first person stories that help express the problems that come along with labeling people.

The book is based off of a nationwide survey and also pulls from the experiences of the author herself. It looks into social labeling and what that might mean to adolescents, who address the impact that it can have and the impact that it has had on their own lives.

The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is ‘What’s in a Label?’ and it talks about the various types of labels and how they develop. Part 2 is ‘How Labels Make People Feel’ and it describes the positive and negative emotions that come with labels. Part 3 is ‘What You Can Do About Labeling’ and has ideas that can help teens break the habit of labeling others and shows ways that they can help others do it too.

Every chapter of this book comes along with quotations from Teen Labels Survey respondents that the reader can look through and that add more detail and insight for the reader. It also includes first person stories from real teenagers who talk about what they have been through regarding cliques, labels, social pressures, and more, and has questions included for self reflection. An insightful book that has a solid message, this is one nonfiction book you might just want to check out!

Loved One is a 2025 novel by Aisha Muharrar. This is a book that was picked as a Best Book of 2025 by NPR and Newsweek. It’s a story that People calls a ‘funny, heartwrenching novel’ and Vogue describes as being a ‘genuine pleasure to read’.

New York Times bestselling author Maggie Shipstead said that this book is full of ‘wildly astute […] questions’ about love and loss and possession. If you’re looking for a unique story that is all about a woman making her way through the world when she goes through a sudden loss and trying to find her footing again, this is the book for you.

Julia thought that bad things were just things that happened to other people. Her first love in the world and now her closest friend Gabe ends up passing away unexpectedly at just 29 years old. Herself 30 years old, Julia now goes on an intercontinental journey to try and get back his lost possessions.

The journey that she goes on will take her all of the way from LA to London and all the way into the past of a person who is now gone. It will also put Julia on a course to collide with the last person that Gabe loved, who turns out to be a florist and restaurateur (and a fairly guarded one at that) named Elizabeth. She wants to hold on to the guitar that Gabe loved so much and this is turning out to be a problem.

All Julia intended to do was to get his things back. Gabe was an indie rock musician and the guitar was one of the things that he treasured the most. Julia cannot understand the reasons why Elizabeth would insist on hanging onto the guitar. But it turns out that both women have something to hide and will engage in a complicated give and take where they get ever closer to revealing what they are hiding.

This is a mystery that you won’t want to miss and a deeply emotional journey as Julia does her best to try and pick up the pieces that Gabe’s sudden passing left behind. Aisha introduces her fictional novel debut and brings the readers an engaging story of love, loss, possession, secrets, memory, the truth, and more.

This is a coming of age story that you will not want to miss that has love at the center of it. Loved One is the type of book that you read and then share with a friend! Don’t miss out on a single word that Aisha Muharrar has to say. Check out this moving debut novel to see what she has to say and find out what happens with Julia and Elizabeth by getting a copy for yourself.
