A.J. Lewis is a successful published author. It is the pen name used by Yusuf DeLorenzo, who is perhaps best known for writing the Muhammad Amalfi Mystery series.
When he was studying abroad as a graduate student, the author had the chance to translate different works sourced from languages such as Persian, Urdu, and Arabic. The stories that he writes are infused through with the love of history and are looking to bridge different cultural differences through the act of sharing adventures as well as challenging situations.
Yusuf currently resides in the state of Florida. Like so many other authors, he has a huge appetite for fiction that is able to open new vistas for him. The point of his own fiction is not to inform the world but to describe it. The code that he has been writing by was articulated by D.L. Doctorow, who notes that ‘Facts are the images of history’ the same way that ‘images are the facts of fiction’, as well as Hannah Arendt, who states that ‘Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it’.
The author has not only written books, he has also made appearances at different gatherings and conferences. Lewis had the chance to speak at the annual conference of the Historical Novel Society in May 2019 in Washington, D.C. about Algiers under the Turkish Regency.
The fiction that he has written has been received well on many different fronts and from many different people and places, with critical acclaim coming from editors, authors, and readers alike. His fourth book in the Amalfi series ‘A Graveyard in Algiers’ was placed as a runner up in the U.K.’s 2017 Beverly Awards. Meanwhile, his second book in the series placed for God as part of the Annual Royal Palm Awards of the Florida Writers Association. His book An Affair of Honor, which went by the different title then called A Runaway in Algiers, was also a finalist in the 2018 annual William Faulkner Awards for fiction.
The author belongs to several groups that are all about writing. These include the Florida Writers Association, the Historical Novel Society, and the Mystery Writers of America.
A Captive in Algiers is the first book in the Muhammad Amalfi Mystery series of novels by A.J. Lewis. If you’ve been looking for a very interesting mystery to read that is going to keep you occupied and entertained at the same time, check this story out and see what you think!
When an orphan boy ends up taking a boat in Amalfi, there is quite a bit that stands to potentially go wrong. Ettore is living in the year prior to revolution breaking out in France, but he glimpses the chance to add some coins to the various strong boxes that he keeps tucked safe close to his hammock. He lives in a brothel, the same place that he has been living ever since he was born. Is he going to be able to get away from fate in a boat on the Tyrrhenian Sea and get away with it as smoothly as he does when he is fleecing the pilgrims and tourists in his native Amalfi?
Ettore learned a lot of what he needed to know while being on the streets of Amalfi, and it’s possible that they could end up being helpful when he really needs them. It’s also just as possible that the seas and the Algerian corsairs who grabbed him to sell on the slave market might end up providing him with yet another helpful lesson.
Young Ettore is doing the best that he can to make it and survive. Along the way, he is having to deal with his beliefs, origins, and his shortcomings when he finds that a sacrifice might be required if he wants to help some of the friends that he has made along the way on this adventure. Full of action and about struggle, identity, friends, loyalty and more, this is a total escape that is a lot of fun.

A corpse found in a Turkish bath, roving groups of insane released from asylums, two trials, and the defense being held up by a law student– what could go wrong?
An earthquake ends up hitting the city, and all of a sudden the alleyways of the Casbah are not only riddled with garbage but now are also full of different cries for help and sounds of grief. Muhammad has only been all too happy to come in and help out with the legal aid for an enslaved manservant who has been accused of murder and a maidservant who he is only familiar with as being ‘An Admirer of Books’.
He is looking to get some justice in court and confidently turns to what he knows about the law. However, could an enemy that he has made in court end up pulling his defense to pieces and having dire consequences that he can’t undo?
There’s also the matter of the madman who apparently lost his entire family at sea. Could he and the Arsenal of Toulon have anything to do with this? What will he end up doing and will Muhammad be able to do the right thing and end up getting the results that he wants?
