It is the second novel in the series. Al Rennie followed that up with the third book in the series, Clearwater Ambush, and many more. If you check out this series you’ll have quite a bit of material to read!
Clearwater Journals is the exciting debut novel in the Clearwater fictional series by accomplished writer Al Rennie. If you love murder mystery books or Agatha Christie novels, you will most likely enjoy this gripping story, the first in the Joe Holiday saga!
It’s in this first book that readers get to meet the main character of Joe Holiday, also known by his nickname Doc. This tough guy used to be a cop and has a skill set that most civilians never cultivate. As such, he’s the perfect man to take on action– and he doesn’t have to look that far. More often than not, the action finds him.
Holiday had the perfect life a long time ago. He enjoyed his job working as a cop in Canada. Then he moved to Florida to take advantage of the great weather and the sunshine, which Canada does not always offer. Sometimes he goes down to IHOP and has some food, which is how he got to know Mia.
Mia is a waitress there and they have a decent rapport. He’s always happy when she waits on him. After a while, Joe finds out more about Mia. Mainly that her younger sister was killed around three years ago and they never found the person that did it. The case remains to this day unsolved.
Joe agrees to look into the murder case because he likes Mia. However, no sooner does he get involved in the case that things begin to get complicated. The murder of her sister seems to be instigating chaos that was previously under the surface. Joe quickly finds himself the target of a mugging, but they are thankfully chased away thanks to the help of two homeless men.
Holiday decides that he’s going to have to take preventive measures to keep himself concealed and disguises his car. In the process, he changes the plates on his sports car to give himself an edge. After all, he and Mia have both suddenly found themselves targets of a man hunt that may end up costing them their lives before they ever catch the killer.
Can this former cop use his wits and skills to track down the killer of Mia’s sister? Or are they destined to find themselves caught in the cross hairs on their search for justice? Find out whether or not they can catch the killer or will come up short by reading Al Rennie’s exciting first novel in the Clearwater series, Clearwater Journals, and discovering what happens at the end for yourself!
Clearwater Diaries is the second novel in this series by Al Rennie. Joe Holiday, or Doc as he is sometimes known, is back again, and the former cop known as Doc is ready for more. Last time, he helped his favorite IHOP waitress to get a little further along the way and try and help her bring closure to the death of her sister, putting them both in danger’s way in the process.
This time, everything has started off with a bit more promise. Joe and Mia have bonded and now are sharing their lives together. Every day is picture perfect in Florida when it comes to Clearwater Beach. For Joe, who has been through a lot, he is just enjoying his newfound relationship and spending time with his girlfriend.
For a guy like this, trouble never seems to be far behind. It seems that Joe is not totally able to outrun his past, either. He owes another cop a serious debt from long ago. Fred Cooper was the police man who was able to get Doc off of what were going to be some pretty serious criminal charges that were going to get him in a lot of trouble. So now, Joe is fully aware that he still owes Fred a big favor.
If Cooper comes asking about the favor, Joe knows that he’s going to have to help him out. That day finally arrives where Joe’s phone rings and it is Fred. It turns out that his brother in law has actually gone missing. The brother was a bit of a criminal, but he’s family, and he calls Holiday to call in the favor and get him to help track the brother in law down.
Joe can’t exactly say no, even though all he would like to do is hang out with Mia. He thinks the entire thing is a bit of a waste of time– what are they going to get out of putting all this energy into finding him? He personally doesn’t feel that the guy is worth all of the effort they’re putting towards it, but he owes the guy one. So now he has to pay up.
From that point on, things do go a little haywire. Doc’s friend finds out that his grandson has been found. He’s been shot in the Mandalay Towers parking garage, and it’s being treated as suspicious. Things are going too far now. When Doc discovers that there may be a connection between that event and the missing brother in law of Fred’s, he’s determined to find out what’s really going on.
Can Doc get to the bottom of all of this once and for all? You’re going to have to read Al Rennie’s exciting second installment in the Clearwater series to find out for sure! Check out these books and the rest of the series if you’re looking for some murder mystery fun or summer beach reading no matter what season it is!

Because Al has had personal issues unfortunately.
I went to school in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada – this same Al Rennie was a high school teacher of mine. I can assure you he is NOT American. That being said I have read all of the books in this series and can assure you they never lose their steam…good from first to last…5 stars
He had a new book on nook, I paid for it. Then got to read about a 1/3 of it & couldn’t get it back, have no idea why he’d go with nook. It’s awful.
Love all the Joe Holiday books. Wondering why there haven’t been any new stories since 2020.
Yeah I am not sure why he has stopped writing I don’t see any updates related to it on his social media
Because Al has been sick unfortunately.
