The first novel series written by Alan was the Horatio Wilkes Mystery series. The two novels of this series were published in the years 2007 and 2008. The first novel of the series was titled ‘Something Rotten’. It was published in the year 2007 by the Dial publishing house. The plot of the novel is set in Denmark, Tennessee and gives a funny and twisting tale similar to that of Hamlet. As always, nothing seems to be going right in Denmark. First, the Copenhagen River gets polluted mysteriously and then Hamilton’s father gets killed by unknown entities. The news of his father’s murder is revealed to Hamilton through a recorded video message which was hidden until now. Soon, the main character of the novel is introduced, named Horatio Wilkes. He is the best friend of Hamilton and is about to visit the Prince mansion in order to meet Hamilton after hearing about the tragic death of his father. Horatio and Hamilton were doing general talks when the video had turned up. Now, they are required to act in unison and find the real killer before he takes someone else’s life. They are aware of the fact that it won’t be an easy task to find the real killer among plentiful suspicious people around. Another character named Olivia Mendelssohn is introduced as an environmentalist who is determined to clean up the Copenhagen River. Olivia is a former girlfriend of Hamilton. She hates the Prince’s paper plant, that has been polluting the Copenhagen River for decades. Hamilton’s mother Trudy marries his uncle Claude after his father’s death. With the marriage, Claude gets entitled to the half of the plant and its profits. Another character named Ford N. Branff is a media mogul, who wants to buy the plant. Ford is also the college flame of Trudy. Horatio Wilkes is efficient enough to carry out the investigation by himself and reveal the motive behind Hamilton’s father’s murder. He does not about the fact that he is just a junior high school student. The novel proved to be a smart, hippy and at the same time mysterious in all aspects. It became a huge hit because of its crackling one-liners and funny twists and turns.

The second novel of the series was published in the year 2008 by the Dial publishing house and was titled ‘Something Wicked’. The novel continues to showcase the mysterious plot on Tennessee, United States. It is the time of the Scottish Highland Festival in the town of Tennessee. The festival is all set to begin with a bang, however, before it could be done a major problem arises. Duncan MacRae, who was the founder the games of the festival is found murdered. Duncan’s son Malcolm gets arrested by the police on suspicion of his father’s murder. However, Horatio Wilkes doubts about Malcolm being the murderer. He goes to attend the Scottish Festival along with his friend Mac, his super hot girlfriend Beth and the sidekick Banks. On reaching the festival, Horatio finds himself entangled in the cutthroat Scottish games. The games are way beyond the understanding of anyone and what is fair seems to be foul, whereas the thing that is foul seems to be fair. Horatio realizes that his best friend Mac might come out to be his worst enemy. However, he cautiously continues to carry out his investigation along with enjoying the festival games. The novel is believed to be based on the Shakespearean play called ‘Macbeth’ and very well keep up with the pace and follow up of the plot and the characters.
