Early and Personal Life
Aleksandar Hemon was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia, to a Ukrainian father and a Bosnian Serb mother on the 9th of September in 1964. Growing up, he developed an interest in reading and writing, becoming a professor of creative writing at Princeton University. Hemon and his wife Teri have two daughters, Ella and Esther. Sadly, their 1-year-old daughter Isabel passed away due to complications associated with a brain tumor, which Hemon movingly wrote about in an essay titled ‘The Aquarium’ for The New Yorker.
Hemon’s love for writing was likely inspired by his childhood spent near the Grbavica Stadium. He was also a supporter of the local soccer team, FK Željezničar, and the English team, Liverpool Football Club.

In 2009, Love and Obstacles was released, followed by the non-fiction work The Book of My Lives in 2013, and the novel The Making of Zombie Wars in 2015. His second non-fiction book, My Parents: An Introduction, was published in 2019. In 2021, Hemon co-wrote the script for The Matrix Resurrections, and his latest novel The World and All That it Holds was released in 2023.
The Lazarus Project
In 2008, Aleksandar Hemon’s stand-alone historical novel ‘The Lazarus Project’ was published by Riverhead Books. The novel, set between Bosnia and Chicago, was met with critical acclaim and won several awards. Hemon’s work has since been admired by readers and critics alike.
On March 2 1908, nineteen-year-old Lazarus Averbuch was fatally shot on the doorstep of Chicago’s chief of police and labeled a would-be anarchist. Brik, a young Eastern European writer living in Chicago, became fascinated by Lazarus’s story and enlisted his friend Rora, a photographer from Sarajevo, to help uncover the truth. Through a tense journey of poverty, crime and prejudice, the stories of both Lazarus and Brik become linked.
The World and All That It Holds
On January 24, 2023, the stand-alone historical novel ‘The World and All That It Holds’ was released by publisher MCD. This long-awaited novel has been highly anticipated by readers of all ages.

When the war broke out, Pinto found himself in the trenches of Galicia. It was in the midst of this chaos that he met the charismatic Osman, who became his protector and lover. Together, they undertook a remarkable journey, from the trenches of Galicia to the other side of the world in Shanghai, with Rafael’s love for Osman and occasional opiates giving him the strength to keep going.
