Alex Ferguson is a former football manager best known as the most successful manager of Manchester United. Colloquially known as Fergie, he was born Alexander Chapman Ferguson in Glasgow, Scotland.

He has the honor of being the longest-serving manager of Manchester United the English Premier League Club.

He was the manager of the club from 1986 to 2013 and during this time, he led the football club to more than 30 international and domestic titles.

These included 13 championships in the Premier League, five cup victories in the Football Association (FA) Cup, and two Champions League titles.

As a sixteen-year-old, Alex Ferguson joined Queen’s Park in the second division of Scottish football. Back then, he was an amateur footballer since he spent his days working at a shipyard in Glasgow.
In 1964, Alex Ferguson went professional as he signed for Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish division. Ferguson scored 31 goals in the 1965-1966 season becoming the joint top scorer.

He was bought for a record £65,000 when he transferred to Rangers in 1967. While he was never spectacular for Rangers, he was a solid player who played for two other clubs in Scotland before he retired in 1974.

Soon after playing his last match, Alex Ferguson was made a manager. He was hired by East Stirlingshire the second division side in Scotland in 1974.

A few months later, he was offered a managerial position with St. Mirren and was instantly successful, as he led them to win the 1976-1977 league championship.

In 1978, he was on the move once again as he was hired to manage Aberdeen Football Club in Scotland. Under his expert hand, Aberdeen had a lot of success making him the most successful manager in the club’s history.

During this time, he was the winner of the country’s top league the Scottish Premier Division between 1980 and 1985. He would be the winner of four Scottish cups, which he won between 1982 and 1986.
Later on, he won the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup. Given Alex Ferguson’s many achievements managing Aberdeen FC, he started getting interest from some big clubs in Europe.

In November 1986, he was offered the managerial position at Manchester United and took it. Under his tutelage, Manchester United was horribly inconsistent in the early years.

They finished 11th, 2nd, 11th, and 13th in the top division in England and this nearly led to Ferguson getting fired.

Alex Ferguson began his journey to becoming the greatest manager of Manchester United in 1990 when he won the FA Cup.

In the 11 seasons that followed, he would become the most successful manager in the club’s history winning eight Premier League Titles between 1992 and 2003. During this time, he also led the club to three FA Cup titles.

The apex of Ferguson’s reign was winning the treble in 1999 when he won the FA Cup, the Champions League title, and the Premier League.

This was a historic moment as no other English club had ever won the continental championship, the domestic cup, and the top division league in the same season.

He would then go on a run winning a second continental title in 2008 and five Premier League titles between 2006 and 2013.

He retired in 2013 having been knighted in 1999 and made Commander of the British Empire in 1995. He had also been named Premier League Manager of the Year nearly a dozen times.
Ferguson penned “Alex Ferguson” his autobiography in 2013.

Alex Ferguson is an entertaining, celebratory, inspiring, and revealing autobiography of arguably the best football manager in British football. After retiring Alex Ferguson began reflecting and writing down highlights of his brilliant career.

It is these highlights that he tells in this work starting from his days working in the Govan shipyard right up to his retirement as manager of Manchester United.

Ferguson retired in a blaze of glory as he won his thirteenth title in 2013 to become the most successful manager in England.

Over more than twenty-five years, he presided over seismic changes at Manchester United with the only constant being his steady hand that consistently won the club titles.

Sir Alex Ferguson was able to create a much envied, welcoming, and purposeful culture at the club that stood the test of time.

In his autobiography, he discusses the seismic changes and growth of Manchester United into a global sports powerhouse.

Leading by Alex Ferguson is a profoundly interesting and superb account of the man who was a colossus in English football for more than a quarter of a century.

Spanning the entire spectrum, the work goes back to Alex Ferguson’s childhood in Glasgow, Scotland, his professional career in the Scotland League, his work as a manager for three Scottish clubs, and ultimately to Manchester United.

It was at the latter where he would really come into his own and even got his name on a stand and even a statue. It tells the story of a man that achieved a lot of success, as he inculcated a habit of success into the organization.
He would become a very integral part of Manchester United, and the club would become synonymous with the manager.

Sir Ferguson writes with candor and thoughtfulness since he does not hold back anything, as he describes vivid scenes and even names players involved.
Reading “Leading” feels like getting one-to-one insights into the mind of one of the greatest minds in football.

Sir Alex tells his readers of how he maintained an iron grip on the dressing room, combined with a relentless hunger for success, and how he managed to remain unchallenged in English football for much of his tenure.

Alex Ferguson’s novel “Managing My Life” is another compelling autobiography of the world’s best managers. The work was penned following the treble-winning season of Manchester United in 1999.
Like several other autobiographies of the great man, it tracks his life from the 1940s to 1999. It tells of his childhood, where and when he attended school, and how he became a skilled toolmaker and then a professional football player.

It then chronicles his adventures during his playing days and as a manager, particularly at Manchester United. It covers everything and fills in gaps, especially where the other works may have failed.
“Managing My Life” is a work that is narrated with a fine combination of human sensitivity and controversy that made it into a very popular work.
