Alice Loweecey
Alice Loweecey is a cozy mystery writer best known for her debut novel Force of Habit. She is a former nun, and features an ex-nun as the protagonist in this book and her first two series. The author’s transition from the convent to marriage is quite eventful, just like her character’s and some of the things contained in these books are drawn from her experiences. Loweecey currently lives with her husband and family in New York. In her free time, she enjoys growing vegetables, taking care of her family, and tending to her garden.
Force of Habit

Force of Habit is the first book in the Falcone & Driscoll Investigation series. The book stars Giulia Falcone, a woman who has just left the convent after ten years of being a nun. Giulia’s life is currently filled with uncertainty, and she is almost sure that she is going to hell. First, leaving the convent feels like abandoning her God. Ten months later, Giulia lands a job with a private investigator, and part of her job is lying and sneaking around to gather information. Giulia’s boss Frank Driscoll turns out to be her complete opposite. The foul-mouthed private eye is not afraid to speak his mind, unlike Giulia, who is timid and ok with keeping her opinions to herself.

Adjusting to the outside world hasn’t been easy for Giulia. She has to figure a way around dating, makeup, sex, and her daily job. Giulia has a massive crush on her boss, but she is almost sure that the soft-hearted private investigator would never fall for her. The duo’s first case involves Blake Parker and his fiancée. Blake and his partner have been receiving disturbing gifts accompanied by messages from the bible, and they can’t help reading trouble in it all. Frank and Giulia get to work on this case, but somehow, the stalker adds Giulia in their twisted game. Thanks to photoshop, photos of Blake and Giulia in a compromising position surface, and this threatens both her job and friendship with Frank. Determined to prove her innocence, Giulia follows the clues oblivious of the danger she is putting on her life.

Giulia is one fascinating character. While her naivety and inexperience on sex matters are hard to identify with, the ex-nun is compassionate, determined, and forgiving. It is easy to fall in love and sympathize with her when things go wrong. The writing is quite good, and the banter between Giulia and Frank is intriguing. It is obvious Giulia is struggling with sex, self-confidence, and relationships in general, but her interactions with Frank help lighten the mood. Will Giulia learn to stand up for herself and set boundaries with her partner? How will her relationship with the cynic Frank end after everything these two go through?

Force of Habit is a crisp, well-written story featuring a unique protagonist with the naivety of a teenager and habits of a 60-year-old. The author incorporates loads of humor, and the snappy dialogue between the characters is sure to leave a smile on your face. With the flawless narration, interesting storyline, and exciting characters, putting down this book will be quite a task. Buy this book if you are a cozy mystery fan, and you can be sure that it will be a worthwhile investment.

Nun Too Soon
Nun Too Soon is the first book in the Giulia Driscoll series. The series stars Giulia Falcone, the protagonist in Loweecey’s debut series Falcone & Driscoll Investigation. In this series, Giulia is already married to her former boss Frank Driscoll. Frank has gone back to police detective work, so Giulia is in charge of her husband’s private investigations firm, a job she does very well. To help her at the office is her able assistant Sidney, who is about to have a baby and Zane, a bright administrative assistant who doesn’t know how to act in a crowd. Since Frank’s return to work, Giulia has had to step up, hone her investigative skills, and learn a thing or two about running a business.

Business is doing great, and for now, Giulia and her colleagues have their hands full. There is an embezzlement case that is keeping all of them busy, not to mention the few jobs they are doing for the church. When a murder case falls on her laps, Giulia simply can’t resist it. Roger Fitch is being accused of strangling his girlfriend to death, and while the whole town thinks he is guilty, Giulia is curious to know who between the people and Roger is telling the truth. What will Giulia discover after working on the Silk Killer case? Is there a chance that her husband is right, and Roger is guilty as charged?
This case is not all Giulia has to worry about. There is the local media that can’t stop trying to dig some dirt about Giulia and her family. The fact that she has to hire another assistant before Sidney goes for maternity leave is also a bit stressful given all the works that is on her plate. Marriage is also turning out to be quite an experience. Still, Giulia thinks that this unfamiliar territory is much better than living in the same house with over one hundred nuns. Fortunately, for the time being, Giulia has Sydney with her wicked sense of humor to help her solve this case and stop her from making bad decisions. The author has done a great job of developing a well-rounded character. Giulia will amaze and annoy you, Sidney is quite admirable, and you can only hope that Zane’s social skills will improve over time.

Nun Too Soon is an intriguing story filled with mystery, humor, and unforeseen twists and turns. All the characters are likable, and the storyline is intriguing. This story will capture your attention from the first page, and as the tension rises, you will keep turning the pages as you look for the answers behind the mystery. If you are looking for an intriguing story with an ex-nun as the main character, this book is a perfect choice.
