Alyssa was born in Flushing, New York, The United States. Today, she lives in South Florida and never stops imagining herself to be living in the post World War I, Victorian and the Edwardian eras. She has a unique fantasy to wear Worth gowns and likes to look after her garden in her manor house.

In addition to that, Alyssa also likes to spend her time watching BBC and other productions along with her afternoon tea. She is happily married and has a couple of daughters who are in their twenties. In relation to some of the writers talk, Alyssa is always available at her South Florida home. She is a proud member of a number of writers’ associations such as the Sisters in Crime, Romance Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, the Novelists and many others as well. Back in the time of her school days, Alyssa used to visit the city of Newport along with her friends. Since then, she has developed a sense of love affair and attraction with the city. She was forced to return to the city time and again because of its harbor-side and gas-lit neighborhoods and the narrow lanes.

Alyssa even met her husband during one of her visits. As an avid learner, she has always been a lover of historical events. Getting married into an old and large family of Newport allowed her to experience exciting discoveries of the ancient historical world. She seems fascinated by the ancient graveyards and the colonies which were built in the 17th century and are still intact. The Newport Artillery Company, which was owned by her husband’s grandfather for many years, was also one of the reasons why Alyssa fell in love with the charm and fascination of Newport. Besides writing, she is also an enthusiastic lighthouse-climber and a collector of nutcrackers. As a famous person, Alyssa got the chance of participating in the Book Festival of the University of Central Florida in the last year.

The ‘Gilded Newport Mysteries’ written by author Alyssa Maxwell consists of three novels published between 2014 and 2015, and set in Newport, Rhode Island at the time of the end of the nineteenth century. The first novel of the series was titled ‘Murder at the Breakers’, which was published by the Kensington publishing house in the year 2014. The plot of the novel shows the time period of August, 1895 in Newport and deals with the mysterious life of the main character Emma Cross. Emma is depicted as the second cousin of Cornelius Vanderbilt, a millionaire patriarch. She is 21 years old and does not seem to have good relations with Cornelius. In spite of that Cornelius has added her on the guest list for a grand ball at his summer home, the Breakers.

Emma works as a reporter in Newport Observer and has been assigned the job of reporting the event in the society page of the newspaper. At the event, which is full of gaiety and glitz, Emma sees a murder happening when the financial secretary of Cornelius Vanderbilt is killed by getting pushed down from the balcony. The next day, Emma finds her brother Brady in Cornelius’s bedroom in a passed out condition. He also holds the stolen plans of a new railroad line. Before he could become sober and explain his side, the police arrest him for the murder and stealing the railroad plan. But, with the suspenseful turn of events, Emma suspects that her brother has been framed into the crime. So, she decides to do some investigations on her own and find out the real killer. She strives hard to save her brother at any cost.

The second novel of the series was published under the title ‘Murder at Marble House’. It was published by the Kensingston publishing house in the same year as the first novel. The plot of this novel continues to deal with the events in the life of Emma Cross and her cousins, the Vanderbilts. Emma is once again depicted as a society page reporter in the Newport Observer. The Vanderbilt family continues to live a fortunate life filled with the bright shine in the high class society of Newport, Rhode Island, during the time the 19th century is about to end and the 20th century is about to begin. But, when a scandal happens relating to a disappearance and a murder, the Vanderbilt family decides to take the help of Emma Cross. One of the cousins of Emma from the Vanderbilt family, Consuelo Vanderbilt tells Emma of being forced to marry the Duke of Marlborough by her mother Alva. The 18 year Consuelo Vanderbilt seems to be in distress after learning about her planned marriage with the Duke.

Consuelo’s mother assures her of a happy married life by calling a fortune teller, in order to make her agree to the marriage. However, the fortune teller is found dead by getting strangled with a scarf by the side of her crystal ball. One of the maids of the Vanderbilt family is taken into police custody on the charger of committing the murder. Followed by the murder of the fortune teller, Consuelo goes missing. She is believed to have disappeared with the man of her choice. Alva requests Emma to find Consuelo as she does not want her to land in the wrong hands. The sequence of the incidents makes everyone believe that Consuelo might have committed the murder of the fortune teller as she did not want to get married to the Duke of Marlborough. However, Emma decides to use all her sleuthing skills to find out the real killer and search Consuelo, the only way by which it can be known whether she was connected to the murder or not and whether she had fled with her beau.

Im not much of a traveler but I love to go virtually to places read about. Through your stories I’ve visited all these famous homes.
The stories are very interesting and while they are mysteries they are also historical. And so true about the struggle women have had to be recognized. Waiting for the next book in the gilded series. In the meantime I’ll seek the lady and maid stories.
