Amita Murray
Amita Murray has lived in and around California, Delhi, and London and likes writing funny things about cultural encounters and relationships. She thinks of herself as a sort of nomad, even though a previous tutor also aptly suggested the label of “cultural abyss”.

Amita’s short story collection, called “Mango and Chutney”, won the SI Leeds Literary prize, in 2016. This collection was partly written under a Leverhulme Writer-in-Residence grant at University College London in 2015, and stories appear in SAND Berlin, Wasafiri, The Berkeley Fiction Review, as well as others. “Thirteenth Night” won the Exeter Novel Prize in 2022.

Amita has held writerly residences with Plymouth University/Literature Works and Leverhulme/University College London. She’s also taught advanced fiction at CityLit London and the University of East Anglia.

“The Trouble With Rose” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 2019. A broken heart and a missing sister. A whole lot of trouble.

Rilla is getting married. Well, not really. She is running away, from Simon (her confused fiance), her big and mad family, and the memories that are nipping at her heels.

Rose, her sister, would know just what to do in such times of crisis. However the issue is, Rose is the crisis. She vanished years ago, and Rilla’s own heart disappeared too. Where is Rose? And who the hell even is Rilla without Rose? If she is to rescue some happiness out of any of this chaos, she’ll need to find that out.

She is forced to go back to the days of slippery memories, big family parties, and the times when she knew exactly what happy looked like. She must learn what happened to Rose.

This is an unforgettable story about family and love, you cannot pick them, but they do make for the best of stories. It’s heartfelt and witty, and is a hilarious and fresh debut about family in all of its messy and brilliant glory. The novel is relatable and entertaining read that is always filled with emotions.

“Arya Winters and the Tiramisu of Death” is the first novel in the “Arya Winters” series and was released in 2021. Arya Winters is just your typical cozy heroine. She lives in this cottage in some small English village, and she bakes for a living, well, she specializes in these macabre desserts. She’s got nosy neighbors, who she avoids ruthlessly because of her social anxiety. And she’s got a keen interest in all things sexy, including the writer next door, Branwell Beam.

When Tobias Yards, her neighbor, winds up dead after eating poisoned tiramisu (certainly not poisoned when she baked it), nobody seems to link it to Arya’s Auntie Meera’s recent death. Instead, they blame her excruciatingly average boyfriend, and Tobias’s nephew, and so she takes things into her own hands. Now all she must do to reveal the truth is to get past her aversion to Other People. Besides that, it is merely a matter of getting past some yellow tape, dodging her ex BFF Tallulah from secondary school, and getting into Branwell’s pants, who seems oddly reluctant.

What Arya does not realize is that this killer is dangerous, who preys on lonely folks that have experienced trauma, and that she may have to do all that she can in order to not become the next victim.

“Arya Winters and the Cupcakes of Doom” is the second novel in the “Arya Winters” series and was released in 2022. A posh estate, a ton of baking, walks through the woods, what could go wrong?

Arya Winters is not one to take residential gigs on, however when she gets invited to bake her cakes for a two week art retreat in the dead of winter on a huge estate, she can hardly turn it down. It’s got the added advantage of helping her get away from her nosy neighbors.

But Monk Hole is rife with secrets. Everywhere she turns, it seems there’s more people with problems, and they all are interested in talking with her. Could things get any worse? This corpse covered in her cupcakes may turn up, possibly. Or Branwell Beam, her ex, seems to have a past that she never knew about, may make an appearance, and with a new girlfriend in tow. It is all Arya can do to hold things together. However can she sort all of it before she loses everything that she holds dear?

“Unladylike Lessons in Love” is the first novel in the “Marleigh Sisters” series and was released in 2023. Amita takes the reader on a journey from the pleasure gardens of society to the dangerous streets in 19th century London, in a spectacular romantic novel by an unforgettable new voice.

Lila Marleigh, as the oldest daughter of an English earl and his Indian mistress, knows what it is like to be an outsider from “polite” society. As kids, she and her sisters were wrenched out of their home and shipped off to England, never quite getting accepted by those that claimed to care for them. Now Lila’s set herself up as the hostess of this exclusive gaming club, charming the ton which flocks to her establishment every night, even though it shuns her during the day.

Ivor Tristram comes barging through her door, this one night, accusing her of being his dad’s mistress. Lila defies his expectations at each step and convinces him to navigate through London’s pleasure gardens and rat pits with her, in her quest to solve this violent crime.

While they set out to uncover the truth, this irresistible passion ignites between the two of them which will shake them to the core. Lila has to fight in order to protect those that she loves, but the biggest threat is to the sanctity of the heart that she has guarded so carefully all of her life.

Amita delivers a sizzling romance novel with just a splash of intrigue. She brings a multifaceted Regency London vividly to life in such a steamy romance that features a captivating heroine, a sexy hero, and quite the high stakes mystery.
