About Amy McCulloch

A well regarded author of children’s and Young Adult fiction, Amy McCulloch is well known for her engaging and insightful novels. A creative and intelligent writer, she has a vast imagination, as she brings entire worlds to life within her many books. Reaching readers from all around the world, it’s also the universal nature of her work that really rings true, instantly grabbing her audience from the outset. Translated into over fifteen different languages worldwide, she’s fast become a household name for many, reaching readers both young and old. Working with a number of other authors and personalities too, she’s also very well known for her collaborative efforts as well.

Early and Personal Life

Born in the United Kingdom, Amy McCulloch is Chinese-white novelist who would go on to grow up in Ottawa, Canada. Raised with a keen interest in both reading and writing, she would develop her love of the written word throughout the years. Taking in inspiration from the world around her, she would put it all back into her work, drawing from well known fantasy authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Prior to becoming a full-time writer she would work as a commissioning editor positioned at leading UK imprint, Penguin Random House Children’s Books. Gaining an insight into the industry, she would fast become a well known figure in the literary world, before going on the publish her own stories. Currently living and working in London to this very day, she has a lot more planned for publication on the horizon, as she continues to make a name for herself.

Writing Career

Starting out with the ‘The Oathbreaker’s Shadow’ in 2013, she would begin with her ‘Knot’s Sequence’ series of novels. Writing a number of other series, she’s also written alongside fellow author and YouTube personality Zoe ‘Zoella’ Sugg, as they published the ‘Magpie Society’ series together. A bestselling writer, she was named one of The Bookseller’s Rising Stars in the publishing world back in 2013.

She also goes under the pseudonym of Amy Alward, which is a pen-name that she uses to write a number of different Young Adult romance titles. Using this name, she’s gone on to write ‘The Potion Diaries’ series of novels, making for a trilogy of Young Adult romance novels. Gaining critical acclaim for her work, she continues to write regularly, maintaining a presence both online as well as off.

Unleashed

Initially released through the ‘Sourcebooks Young Readers’ publishing imprint, this would first arrive in 2021 on the 5th of January. Setting up the second title in the ongoing ‘Jinx’ series of books, it’s another action packed children’s adventure set in the same world as before. It’s best that the books are read in order so as to get the most out of them, as it provides everything fans of the series will be looking for. With a fun colorful adventure, it’s an easily accessible read, as its younger audience will definitely get a lot from it.

Not having any memory of how she got there, Lacey Chu is shocked to find herself waking up in a hospital bed, along with her robot pet, the cat baku named Jinx missing. Her family is also being threatened by the company Moncha, who were the ones to create the pet, and then Lacey is expelled, while her mother acts strangely. Working together with her friends, Lacey must find out what’s really going, and how Moncha are entangled in all this, as they take on the biggest tech company in North America. Are they up to the task though, can she find out what’s really going on, and how will they fare once the enemy is unleashed?

Breathless

Originally brought out on the 17th of February, this would first come out in 2022 through the ‘Michael Joseph’ publishing label. It would mark a turning point for Amy McCulloch as an author, as it would be her first thriller novel for an adult market. A self-contained story, it’s a contemporary stand-alone thriller that can be read on its own, as it’s easy to pick up, yet difficult to put down.

Joining an expedition to climb the world’s tallest mountain, Cecily Wong a struggling journalist takes the opportunity of a lifetime. Then there’s a theft, then an accident, followed by a note attached to her tent telling her there’s a murderer with them upon the mountain. With the climb becoming more dangerous as they progress up the mountain it seems that the pressure is on, and then a body is found. Just who is the the murderer, can they find out before there’s another victim, or will they all finally end up breathless?

It’s truly a nail-biting book, as it really makes the most of not only its premise, but its location as well, with its many dangers. Taking readers to the edge, there’s so much tension here, as the story definitely holds the reader right on the edge of their seat. Constantly turning the page for more, there’s a surprise on every page, along with well drawn characters and believable dialogue.
