Amy Stuart
Amy Stuart was born in Toronto. Aside from writing, she loves hockey. Ice hockey. She’s one of just four female head coaches in world’s largest youth competitive hockey league, the GTHL.

In 2019, she founded Writerscape, this online community for emerging and hopeful writers.

Amy’s writing, which has won the 2011 Writers’ Union of Canada Short Fiction Competition and shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis Best First Novel Award, has appeared in magazines and newspapers across Canada. She was also a finalist for the 2012 Vanderbilt/Exile Award.

In the year 2012, she completed her MFA in Creative Writing through the University of British Columbia. Amy worked for many years as a high school educator with the majority of her career spent teaching guidance and English in downtown alternative high school.

Early in her writing career she figured out that plotting was her favorite part of writing. Thrillers are inherently plot heavy; as they require a ton of thinking about delivery and pacing. Sometimes it can feel mathematical. Amy really enjoys this challenge. She also loves attempting to write something which readers are going to have a tough time putting down. Thrillers can be magic that way.

Amy generally gets her initial inspiration from stories in the news that she finds odd. In the case of “Still Water”, it was a story about a woman that went missing in the woods and her family kept complaining that the townspeople/police did not seem to be searching too hard for her. From there, Amy just built the story by layering in plot points or character traits that she believed would enrich the story.

“Still Mine” is the first novel in the “Still” series and was released in 2016. What happens if you disappear from your life and don’t leave a story behind? Somebody will make one up for you.

Clare is on the run. From her ex, her past, and her own secrets. When she shows up all alone in the remote mining town of Blackmore asking about Shayna Fowles, this local girl that vanished, everybody wants to know who Clare truly is and what she is hiding. As it turns out, she is hiding quite a bit, including what links her to Shayna in the first place. However everybody is hiding something in this place. From Charlie, the charming small-town drug pusher; to Jared, Shayna’s golden haired ex-husband; to Derek, Shayna’s overly involved family doctor; to Wilfred and Louise, her distraught parents.

Did Shayna flee? Or was she killed? Could it be possible for her to still be alive? While Clare uncovers the mysteries that surround her disappearance, she has to confront her own personal demons, moving the reader deeper into the labyrinth of lies and making us question what she could really be running away from. Electrifying and twisting, this is a get-under-your-skin thriller which will make you question what it means to lose yourself and find yourself in the unlikeliest of places.

“Still Water” is the second novel in the “Still” series and was released in 2018. Malcolm and Clare have returned and this time they are on the hunt for a missing mom and son in a town which is drowning in deception. Clare might be in her gravest danger yet.

How do you find the truth in the town filled with secrets? Clare must find them.

Sally Proulx and her young son have mysteriously vanished in the stormy town of High River. Clare’s hired to track them both down, hoping against all odds to find them both alive. However High River’s not your typical town. This is a place where women run to, women looking to escape from their past. They run right to Helen Haines, this matriarch that offers them anonymity and safe haven. Pretending to be Sally’s long lost friend, Clare shows up and begins asking some questions, however nothing can prepare her for the depth of the lies and swirl of deception.

Could Sally have drowned? Did her son drown? Could it have been just an accident, or is their disappearance part of something much bigger?

In a town where secrets are vital to survival, everybody’s hiding something. Detectives Rourke and Somers obviously have an ulterior motive beyond just solving this case. Malcolm Boon, the guy that hired Clare, knows a lot more about her than he’s revealed. And Helen’s concealing this tragic family history of her own. Clare, while the truth is surging through High River, has to face the one thing she has so desperately been running away from, even if it comes at a pretty devastating price. “Still Water”, twisty and compulsively gripping, is a deep dive of a thriller which will leave you breathless.

“A Death at the Party” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 2023. In this spellbinding and tense thriller set over the course of just a single day, one woman prepares a party which is going to go terribly wrong.

Nadine Walsh’s summer garden party’s in full swing. All of the neighbors have cocktails, the catered food is most excellent. Everything is going according to plan. However Nadine, a loving mom, devoted wife, and doting daughter, finds herself standing over this corpse in her basement as her guests are clinking glasses upstairs. How did it come to this? What happened?

Nadine, rewinding back to that morning, is in her kitchen, making the last minute preparations before she welcomes over a hundred guests to her home in order to celebrate her mom’s birthday. However her husband is of little help to her, her two grown kids are consumed with concerns of their own, and her mom, just her mom knows that today is not only a birthday party. It marks another anniversary too.

But Nadine will still focus only on tonight. Everybody deserves for this to be a celebration after the year they have had. A chance to forget and a chance to have some fun. However it is tough to just forget when Nadine’s mind swirls with haunting memories, secrets, and concerns over what may happen when her guests unite.
