Andre Norton was a noteworthy American writer of fantasy and science fiction genre. Her real name was Andre Alice Norton and she was born Alice Mary Norton. She used to love writing novels based on romance and adventure genres as well. Norton has many accolades to her name which she got through her successful writing career. Her specialty was that she used to write her novel under different pen names. Some of the pen names that she frequently used were Andrew North, Andre Norton and Allen Weston. Norton was born in the year 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio and died at the age of 93 in the year 2005. Andre Norton was the first woman to be SFWA Grand Master and the first to be inducted to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. She was also the first woman to be the Gandalf Grand Master.

Andre Norton was born to Adalbert Freely Norton and Bertha Stem Norton. She attended the Collingwood High School as a kid, where she began writing short stories as her hobby under the guidance of Miss Sylvia Cochrane. Later, she became the editor of a literary page in the ‘The Collingwood Spotlight’, which was her school’s paper. In those days, she had finished writing her first novel named ‘Ralestone Luck’ while still at school. She had the ambition of becoming a school teacher and hence she got herself enrolled at the Western Reserve University after passing out from high school in the year 1930. But, she dropped the idea because of the Great Depression after studying there for a couple of years. She began working at the Cleveland Library System for earning her livelihood. She devoted eighteen years of her life in the children’s section of the Nottingham Branch Library, where she used to work and write novels simultaneously. With a view to increase the marketing of her books, she changed her name to Andre Alice Norton. She believed that keeping a boy’s name for writing fantasy novels would attract more audience. D. Appleton-Century Company was the first to publish her initial writings. Norton resigned from the library job due to ill health and began focusing on her novels as a full time professional writer. Most of the novels that she wrote were received with good reviews and established her as a successful novelist.

Andre Norton was nominated more than once for Hugo Award for her novel ‘Witch World’ as well three times lifetime achievement for the World Fantasy Award. She won that award in the year 1988. Almost all of her novels have appeared in the ‘best of year’ polls and won awards in many categories. She was also a founding member of the writer’s association named SAGA. Norton had to constantly change cities because of her deteriorating health, yet she did not stop writing till the last moment. She was working on a collaboration with Jean Rabe when she died of congestive heart failure. Her last novel named ‘Three Hands of Scorpio’ was published after her death. Norton started getting noticed for her initial novel series such as the Witch World, The Time Traders and The Turning. The Time Traders series comprised of seven very interesting novels which were published from 1958 to 2002. The series was based on the life of time agents named Travis Fox and Ross Murdoch, who used to travel through space and time to protect the Earth. The first novel of the series was ‘The Time Traders’ which was published in 1958, which was later updated in the year 2000. The novel introduces the main characters, plot and the confrontation between the good and the bad. A mysterious race named the ‘Reds’ comprising of aliens is described to make alterations on the Earth. They are opposed by the Western Heroes who are shown to save the Earth from the aliens by alternately moving from 2000 B.C to the present day.

The plot of the novels shows agent Ross Murdoch joining a secret organization for defeating the Red enemies and stop them from alternating the ancient history of Earth for their own benefit. Murdoch is first captured by the enemies but later manages to escape. He discovers an alien spaceship consisting of bald aliens who are also the enemies of the Reds. Murdoch is successful in escaping with useful information and technology of the baldies. He uses this information with the help of his secret organization to defeat the enemies and destroy their installations. The novel was very well received by the audience. Famous authors and novelists praised Andre Norton for her efforts. She was able to establish herself as a prolific writer with the success of this novel and this motivated her to write its sequel. The second novel of the series was named ‘Galactic Derelict’. It got published in the year 1959 and later reprinted in eight editions in the later years. The sequel, along with the first novel is a part of the Forerunner universe of Andre Norton. This novels shows the continued encounter between the Western Heroes and the aliens. The time travel takes place present day to about 10,000 years ago. The novel got praises because raised issues of racism against the American Indians at that time. The plot shows Travis Fox joining Ross Murdoch in the secret mission. They are taken along in the past and are seen looking for crashed spaceship. They finally discover an alien ship in working condition and take shelter in it. But they get trapped in it as the spaceship takes an automatic course to a ruined city of advanced civilization. They come across local people and help them with weapons for protecting themselves. They starting experimenting on the ship after finding a similar technology to be able to direct it back to the Earth.

This novel too opened to positive reviews from the readers specially the youngsters. The science fiction genre was very much liked by everyone and this compelled Andre Norton to complete the seven novel series in the coming days. After her death, the Science Fiction and fantasy Writers of America announced the ‘Andre Norton Award’ to be given to prolific writers of science fiction and fantasy genre. Andre Norton devoted 70 years of life writing novels and published over 300 titles. She was rightfully called the Grande Dame of Science Fiction and Fantasy by organizations, biographers, Publishers Weekly and Time. She has inspired a lot of youngsters of this generation towards giving thoughts to their imagination.

   I read Storm over Warlock in the fifth grade and it changed my life, making me a dedicated science fiction fan. I still love Andre Norton books.

   I started reading Norton’s “Time Traders “ in 1967 in Jr High (7th )
   I have enjoyed her books more than any others and have been an avid reader my whole life. I read everything from sifi to Westerns to Murder Mysteries, but she got me hooked. I have a personal library of over 300 volumes.

   The first book by Andre Norton was given to me by my uncle, father’s brother. The title was Star Gate. This was about 1957. I have collected as many of her books as I could find ever since. I still reread those books and they as good the last time as they were the first. Very few writers can match Andre Norton’s writing.

   I discovered Andre Norton’s “Witch World” in junior high school (probably 1979) and read everything I could find. I was part of the nascent RPG crowd at that time and I distinctly recall sitting on my bed studying the new D&D manuals that would soon replace the World of Greyhawk while being distracted by the “Witch World” on top of my school stuff.

   Norton’s books, especially the ones that mixed her ideas of magic and technology and for me at the time, the sheer horror of magic/tech in the wrong hands, were a powerful influence on me and my writing.

   This is a great list of her work and exactly what I was looking for as I introduce her books to my youngest niece who I hope will enjoy Norton’s worlds as much as I did.

   Andre Norton, to me is the finest scifi writer ever. i have read her books for over 65 years.not only did she spin a great scifi story, she also wrote some really good historical fiction books

   First read the hardcover edition of Star Man’s Son (illustrated) in 1954 when I was 10. Found it on a school trip to our small town library. I have read most of her scifi work and reread many from time to time still.

   An avid reader since the 60`s. The Stars Are Ours was my first book and got me hooked for a lifetime. I am now 72 retired in Myrtle Beach, SC and just today got a Kindle and will be reading all of her books before I depart. Hoping to hook my Grandkids.

   How I started reading Andre Norton, was that I found a copy of Daybreak 2250 lying in the road coming home from school. I read that story so fast I had to reread it just to make sure I got the story. From then on, I was a reader, then collecting them. She had a way of writing that put you in the story as you read. You were sure, those places existed, somewhere. That was 63 years ago, and I still enjoy her stories today.

    One of my first and favorite sci-fi authors; I started reading her work in the 70s and find most of it has aged really well. Thank you for sorting out the series, both by publication date and chronological order — a huge help as I’m trying to seek out remembered titles and ones I missed and how they fit together. Norton always gave the impression that she was writing about one giant continuous galaxy of planets and peoples in various stages of civilization and exploration, some from deep history and some still to come. Wish we knew more about her personal life, but she came from a different era and kept her privacy.

    The REDS in the Time Trader series were the Russians. You have to remember that the books were written during the cold war era. The aliens were the Baldies. The first sci-fi book I ever read was The Time Traders when I was in 4th grade. I was hooked for life! Love her books so much!

    Andre Norton was my favorite author growing up, i am now 55 and i love writing stories, both single and series in different genres, some of my main characters are even evil in nature, although most of my main characters just try to do the right thing as i have always tried to do in my life.
