Andrea Camilleri was one of the most famous Italian writers in 21st and 20th century. He was born on September 6th, 1925 in Porto Empedocle near Agrogento. He is recognized all over the world for his great work of the Montalbano series. He passed away on July 17th, 2019.

In 1944, Andrea Camilleri began his studies at the faculty of Literature. At the same time he began publishing short stories and poems. His passion for writing began at a tender age. He followed some of the great authors’ literature which gave him direction and the passion for writing. While at the faculty of literature, he joined the Italian community Party.

Andrea Camilleri studied film and stage direction from 1948 to 1950 at Silvio D’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts. At the same time, he became a screen writer and a director. The first play which he directed was by Beckett and Pirandello. In his essay, he says that Pirandello and his parents were distant friends.

After completing his studies at Silvio D’Amico Academy, he worked on some of the TV productions which included Inspector Maigret. In 1977, he went back to Academy of Dramatic Arts where he became the chair of Movie direction for 20 years. His work was highly recommendable that is why he was able to sustain the position for a period of 20 years.

His first and second novel “The Way Thing Go” and “A Thread of Smoke” published in 1978 did not get a significant amount of popularity. After 12 years that is 1992, he wrote his third book La Stagione de’lla “The hunting season” which gained a lot of popularity. It turned out to be the best seller in 19th and the 20th century. In 2005, he received an honorary degree from the University of Pisa.

After publishing several books, he gained popularity in mainland Italy. His works were feature in the TV especially the Montalbano’s adventures increasing his popularity. Because of his popularity and the great works he had written he won the Nino Mortoglia Book Award which was covered internationally. At the same time, he changed his official denomination to that which belonged to Porto Empedocle Vigata. In 2001, he also won the Grand Officer in the Italian Republic. Additionally, in 2012, he was also announced a winner of the Crime Writer’s International in a ceremony that was held in London as One Birdcage Walk.

Andrea Camilleri lived in Rome. He worked as a theatre and TV director. He had gained popularity in North America and UK because his novels have circulated all over those countries. 10 million of his books have been sold today Additionally, because of his experience in the media industry, he has become more of a media icon than a writer. His programs have been aired regularly in Radio and TV shows.

Recently, many of his books have been translated into French, Spanish, Greek, Dutch, and English. This made his book gain popularity all over the world.

The Terra-Cotta Dog (Il cane di terracotta)

The book shows mysterious of two young lovers. He brings out the aspect of love at a tender age. The book opens up the mysterious with a Mafioso. He shows how the experiences of young lovers are watched over by a terra-cotta dog. Inspector Montalbano in his quest to find out the plan forward secretly observers the two lovers still embracing. The book brings out the character of Montalbano and how he is willing to bring out the secrets.

His journey to find out the secret of the two lovers is liked to journey through the amid horrors of World War 11. Montalbano makes sure that he gets to understand the character of the lovers. His persistence and passion for what he does make him distinctive character. He is ready to sacrifice everything to ensure that he gets to understand the way of life of the two lovers. That is why he observers them at a far distance to ensure that his secrets are not revealed. His earthiness and intelligence make him irresistible.

The shape of the water (La forma dell’acqua)

The shape of the water is one of the contemporary mystery novels written by Andrea Camilleri. The main character is an Italian policeman who does not care about the person he offends when he is solving a criminal case.

In one of the cases there is no crime at all when a local contractor is found dead in a compromising situation. They all believe that he deserved death and the Inspector stands by that. In the another case, Silvio Luparello suffers a massive attack in the process of having a last fling with one of the prostitutes. Inspector Montalbano who is also a main character in the book becomes suspicious when a bishop, a judge and one of the most powerful politicians decide to do away with the case without investigation. They all do all that they can to ensure that the case is closed. He manages to get an extension of 48 hours and he sorts the issue out.In all the cases he has shown his skills and how he can easily solve situations. Andrea brings out a very unique character of Inspector Montalbano.

The author introduces us to Montalbano’s wife Livia. He reveals to us that much of their relationship is on the phone but Montalbano is always faithful to his lady friend although he is tempted by other women. He also has a house keeper Adelina who makes sure that his refrigerator is filled with local seafood. He always invited his commissario’s wife to sample some of her creative recipes for dinner.

Some of his books have been broadcasted in the Television that is why he has gained the great popularity for instance, the Inspector Montalbano’s series. They are also available in DVD’s so one can easily access them. the translation of the book to other languages has also enabled Andrea to sell his novels in United Kingdom and some parts of America. Additionally, he is known for his great poetry work. Recently, he is the author of three poetry book one of them being “The Open Vault”.
