Andrea Penrose is American author of Historical Mystery, Mystery, and Thrillers novels. She started writing westerns at the tender age of 5 years complete with crayons drawing to illustrate them. It is not a surprise that she graduated with a master’s degree in Graphic Design from Yale School of Art, served in the publication design plus she is a famous writer of romance novels using the name Cara Elliot and Andrea Pickens.

The author’s historical novels are set in Regency England. She has won awards including the two Daphne Du Maurier Awards. Additionally, she has been a 3-time finalist for the prestigious RITA Award. Her novels have been translated into over eight languages.

Penrose was first published in 2011 when Sweet Revenge, the first book in Lady Arianna Hadley Mystery was published. The 2nd book in the series is The Cocoa Conspiracy published the same year as the first while Recipe for Treason the third book was released in 2012.

The second series authored by Andrea Penrose is Murder on Black Swan Lane published in 2017. The title is the first novel in a series Quill Mystery series.

Sweet Revenge

Lady Arianna is exiled from her home in the Caribbean due to her father disgrace, but when her father is murdered, she vows to get revenge when the perfect moment comes. Years pass by, and Arianna finds herself in the perfect moment to execute her revenge. She disguises herself as a male Chef. However, when Prince Regent falls sick after eating from Arianna’s table, she becomes the prime suspect thus bringing her plans to a standstill.

Alessandro De Quincy, half-Spanish Earl of Saybrook, is called to investigate what is suspected to be poisoning of Prince Regent. The investigator not only discovers that the alleged suspect is a woman but also that she wants revenge. These partners now have to work together if they need to find the person who exactly wants to kill Prince Regent and somehow might coincide with Arianna’s revenge.

Sweet Revenge is a cozy mystery that delivers exactly what the readers want. It also features vividly explained historical details about both the period as well as the chocolate as a new variety of food in England. The characters are also fully developed; their interaction creates an authentic mystery.

The book focuses majorly on the mystery element, both Arianna’s investigations regarding her father’s murder and Saybrook investigation about Prince poisoning.

The relationship that exists between Saybrook and Arianna is great. These two are both interesting but also puzzling characters; however, their initial interactions were entertaining but also filled with tension.

Apart from the mystery concept of the book, the author intersperses chocolate recipe at the beginning of each chapter in all the books in the series. These recipes are tempting and delicious and serve to give you a taste of the original chocolates.

The Cocoa Conspiracy

The Cocoa Conspiracy continues the narrative of two characters Alessandro de Quincy and Lady Arianna first introduced in Sweet Revenge. In this book, they make a return as newlyweds. As soon as they settle in their marriage life, chocolate delights, academic pursuits, and mystery blows their way. When Arianna acquires a book with complex engravings of the cocoa tree for her husband’s birthday, she trips into a political conspiracy that follows them. Arianna soon realizes the explosive nature of her purchase. Once again, Sandro and Arianna team up to solve the mystery while at the same time maintaining their parlous standing in the society.

The author Penrose does a splendid job of taking the reader back to the Regency England (the period when King George III was ruled unfit to rule, and son ruled). She does not miss a single bit by adding some nontraditional characters that help solve the mystery of the novel. The author also dishes up a side story – a growing romance between the couple whose love is sweeter like cocoa and makes us addicted to the Regency England. The author’s witty dialogue makes the characters real to the readers.

Recipe for Treason (2017)

The third installment in A Lady Arianna Regency Mystery series & it follows the adventures of Sandro and his wife Lady Arianna during the Regency England. The year is 1814, and what Lady Arianna and her husband want is to live a happy and quiet couple life accompanied by an occasional cup of chocolate. However, when they get orders that they must travel to England and capture an evasive traitor, they understand that duty to the crown comes first.

While inside a lab in Scotland, they discover the body of a chemistry professor and ambiguous paper that hint a new and a dangerous discovery now in the hands of the enemy. Racing against time, Saybrook and Arianna pursue their most dangerous and cunning adversary through a complex chain of interests involving daredevil aviators, exotic chocolates, a secret recipe and a missing inventor who must be found must be found at any cost.

Murder on the Black Swan Lane (2017)

It is a murder mystery and the first novel in Quill Mystery series. Charlotte Sloane is an artist; she continues her husband’s work when he dies, as a ironic cartoonist. On the other hand is Earl of Wrexford, a bored aristocrat has a brilliant mind and also superb in scientific experiments.

So when Earl is considered a suspect in a murder case, he sets out to prove that he is innocent and discover who the real killer is. In the course of his investigations, he encounters Charlotte and proposes to her to join forces since she has ways, and of accessing information that is beyond him and in exchange, he will keep her secret.

Helping in this journey are two brothers, Hawk and Raven, street children whom Charlotte befriends and tries to take care of in a secretive way. Raven is proud and is the protector of his younger brother. Other characters appear throughout the story. Even though there some bits of experiments and science, the overall story is overwhelming and you will find it fascinating.

Charlotte and Earl make one great team especially with the addition of Hawk and Raven. This debut is for sure a start of a great series.
