Author Angus Donald was born in the year 1965 in China and went to Edinburgh University and Marlborough College. From Edinburgh University, he got a Master’s in Social Anthropology. His parents were British diplomats, and as a result, they spent a lot of time in different countries (Zaire, Greece, Hong Kong, and Indonesia) growing up.
Donald has been a journalist in different countries like New Delhi, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Hong Kong, India, Islamabad, and London. It was a job that he held for twenty years, and for much of that time, he spent in the unglamorous role of editor. The most dangerous work he did during this time, was as a war correspondent in Afghanistan. He was there right after 9/11, and was one of the first journalists to make it into Afghanistan. He worked in all of these countries before trying to write his first novel.
He has worked different jobs, some of which include: a waiter (in New York), picking fruit (in Greece), and an anthropologist that studied witchcraft and magic (in Indonesia).
In order to get his Master’s, he had to work for six months doing field research in Indonesia. After this, he had to write a twenty thousand word dissertation on the experience.
Donald writes the “Outlaw Chronicles” series and the “Holcroft Blood” series. His novels are from the historical fiction genre. His first novel, “Outlaw” was released in the year 2009.
“Outlaw” is the first novel in the “Outlaw Chronicles” series, which was released in the year 2009. When young Alan Dale gets caught stealing, he has to leave his family and go live with a notorious group of outlaws in Sherwood Forest.
The leader of the group is the infamous Robin Hood. He is a bloodthirsty and tough warrior, and is more feared than any other man in the entire country. He starts mentoring Alan, and with the other outlaws, he starts teaching Alan not just how to fight but how to win.
Robin is ruthless, though and even though he protects Alan, he might just become his killer should Alan displease him.
Fans of the novel find that they were glad they decided to read this one. This is one of the most original tellings of the Robin Hood legend that many have read. Angus Donald makes a Robin Hood that is believable and balances the hero that everyone knows and loves with the criminal and outlaw he would have been.
“Holy Warrior” is the second novel in the “Outlaw Chronicles” series, which was released in the year 2010. Sphere Arrows are going to fly and swords will be swung. And heroes will fall. Legends are going to survive. The Holy Land is never going to be the same ever again. 1190 AD and Richard the Lionheart launched his big crusade to take Jerusalem from the brutal Saracens.
Marching along with the vast army of the British is Robin Hood himself, Britain’s most feared and famous, most ferocious warrior. He is the outlaw and Earl of Locksley. With his band of men with him, Robin cuts a bloody path on their way east.
Dangerous and daring, he is able to survive and outsmart any enemy, but these crimson battlefields on the Holy Land make for the ultimate proving ground. Inside Robin’s camp is a traitor. It is a stealthy enemy that is determined to kill Christendom’s best outlaw before the fade of the trumpets.
Taking Robin to the Holy Land is a great idea and helps take things in a different direction from the first book. Fans of the novel enjoy reading about King Richard in these books. Some like the way that Alan Dale narrates the novels as an old man. It allows him to paint his life like respected Lord and gives him the chance to bare his soul about the horror he helped commit or witnessed.
“King’s Man” is the third novel in the “Outlaw Chronicles” series, which was released in the year 2011. Richard Lionheart is heading for England. Is the greatest warrior going to make it back home with every prince of England united against him? The Lion is captured, chain, bound, and imprisoned.
King Richard’s small hope of salvation is with just one man, a vengeful earl and one time outlaw. He is a man that scoffs at Holy Mother Church. Robin Hood.
For King and for country Robin and Alan Dale (Robin’s loyal lieutenant) are going to risk it all. They will go from blood soaked battlefields to lethal killers so they can ensure the Lionheart is restored to his rightful throne.
Fans of the novel find the more they read these books the more they believe that this is the best portrayal of the Robin Hood character. One of Angus Donald’s strengths is his ability to tell a story, which is present in spades in this book. His writing style also fits Alan’s uppity musical personality perfectly.
“Warlord” is the fourth novel in the “Outlaw Chronicles” series, which was released in the year 2012. May of 1194. Richard the Lionheart has finally been released from captivity and in Normandy fighting a bloody war to push the French out of his continental patrimony. The Lionheart uses the brutal tactics of medieval warfare (which include savagery, siege, and scorched earth) and is pushing King Philip of France’s forces back.
With him is Robert (Earl of Locksley, known as Robin Hood) , and Sir Alan Dale (loyal friend, renowned warrior of great skill, and musician).
The battles rage and bodies pile up, Robin seems only interested in profiting from the war’s devastation. Alan is preoccupied with finding out who had his father killed ten years back. The mystery takes him towards Paris, which is deep in the heart of enemy territory.
Fans of the novel like the way these books have no formula to them; each new title has a new story, new themes, different feel, and a fresh perspective to them. With the story, there is a new and interesting way around the familiar old legends. There is a brutal and fresh interpretation of Robin, which is unlike any of the ones from television.
