A British writer, Anna Mazzola has been making waves within the literary industry of late, largely thanks to her unique perspective and distinctive take on the format, as she is able to write in a manner that is both immediately relatable, whilst also transporting the reader, taking them to far off eras and time periods. It is a testament to her writing that she manages to bring such distant lifestyles and periods to life in a manner that is at once easy to relate to on such a personal and intimate level. Creating characters that, whilst living in different eras, are universal is somewhat of a gift for Mazzola, as she brings them to life off of the page, allowing the reader to gain a firm idea of what it was really like to live back in the past. Mainly focusing on historical crime fiction, she’s not afraid of moving towards the darker elements of the particular period she’s writing about either. Having done extensive research over the years, her work also displays a high degree of accuracy, something which she balances with a clear love for the form and entertainment, as she sacrifices neither one for the other. Creating escapist narratives, she allows her readers to immerse themselves in her intricately woven worlds, as they find something to involve themselves within, regardless of their backgrounds, something which she clearly excels at. This is something she has clearly developed over the years, creating fun and inventive novels that really engage the reader, keeping them constantly turning the page in order to discover what happens next. Her characters are also extremely well drawn too, as they really leap off of the page, as she really manages to get deep into their mindset, drawing out universal truths and traits. This is something that will continue far on into the foreseeable future, as she will carry on writing for a long time to come.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up within London in the United Kingdom, Anna Mazzola would grow up with a clear affinity for the craft of writing, showing a passion for both reading and literature. Attending Pembroke College, Oxford, she would go on to study English, as she would nurture this talent, developing it over the years to follow. Later becoming a criminal justice solicitor, she would pursue a career in law, something that would come to shape much of her career that was to follow. With a lot more planned on the horizon, she would manage develop these knowledge bases in the years to follow, as she continues to write to this very day.

Writing Career

Bringing out her first novel in 2016, she would make her debut with the historical crime novel ‘The Unseeing’, which would also win an award for the first chapter in 2014. Receiving the ‘Grazia First Chapter’ competition in 2014, she would quickly follow this success in 2018 with her second book ‘The Story Keeper’, which would also fall into the genre of historical crime novel. Showing a passion for folklore as well, she plans to write more on the subject of fairy tales in the future too, something which clearly marks her career as one to watch in the years to follow.

The Unseeing

Initially brought out through the ‘Headline’ publishing outlet, this would first come out on July the 14th in 2016, as it would be the debut novel for Anna Mazzola as an author. Winning an award in 2014, this would mark the arrival of a new author, as well as establishing her style as a writer and novelist of historical crime fiction. Establishing a lot of what was to follow, she develops her style as an author here, allowing it to really speak to readers on a very primal level.

Taking place in 1837, this sees Sarah Gale, a seamstress and mother living in London at that time, sentenced to hang for the murder of Hannah Brown, who was killed on the eve of her wedding. With Edmund Fleetwood is then assigned to the case, all whilst battling his own inner demons, as he aims to help Sarah find justice. The only problem is, though, is that she doesn’t want to be helped as she seems consigned to be hung for the crime, despite her apparently being innocent. Why is she ready to hang despite not committing the murder and what could she possibly be hiding? Will Fleetwood be able to find the real culprit and ensure that justice prevails? What will become of the unseeing?

The Story Keeper

Setting up another historical crime novel, this was originally brought out on the 26th of July in 2018 to much acclaim and anticipation. Working as another stand-alone title, it would continue to bring up many of Mazzola’s primary interests and ideas as an author. Released through the ‘Tinder Press’ publishing label, it would manage to evoke a real air of mystery and wonder, whilst also bringing the past to life once more.

Bringing together many of Anna Mazzola’s passions, this draws them altogether, as she incorporates a number of different themes into her second novel. With Audrey Hart as her central protagonist, it would allow her to tell the story through her eyes, whilst all the secondary character would bring the surrounding isle and folklore to life. The Isle of Skye itself is also extremely well drawn as she manages to establish a firm sense of atmosphere and ambiance, whilst also painting a strong portrait of the area itself too.

Set in 1857, this sees Audrey Hart moving to the Isle of Skye, as she aims to collect the fairy tales and folklore of those that she finds there. That’s when the body of a young girl washes up on the shore, as the locals believe it to be a group of evil spirits that have done the heinous deed. Looking to uncover the truth, Hart must travel into her own past, as her mother, also a woman from Skye, also disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Are the women being abducted? Will she find the truth? What will become of the story keeper?
