Anne Hillerman is one of the most reputed authors of America who writes her books based on the nonfiction and mystery genres. She is the daughter of the former bestselling author of mystery novels named Tony Hillerman and has recently started to continue his bestselling mystery series titled ‘Leaphorn & Chee’.

Before starting her writing career, author Anne worked as a journalist for than 20 years. She used to work first in the Alburquerque Journal and then for the Santa Fe New Mexican. Apart from these professions, she has also been working as a food critic since the year 2001 for the Alburquerque Journal. Author Anne started her writing career in the year 1984 with the release her debut nonfiction book called ‘Children’s Guide to Santa Fe’.

It was not before 2013 that she published her first novel, which was titled as ‘Spider Woman’s Daughter’. This mystery novel is set in the Southwest. Anne has continued to describe the adventures of Jim Chee, Joe Leaphorn, Bernadette Manuelito, that her father made popular.

The book went on to win the Spur Award from the WWA in the category of the Best First Novel of the year 2013. This was followed by her second mystery novel titled ‘Rock With Wings’, which quickly went on to become one of the New York Times bestselling novels of the year.

Along with the help of her photographer husband named Don Strel, Anne has worked on a project for the New Mexico Press University. This project included the introduction and photographic re-issue of one of the nonfiction book of essays written by her father.

In the introduction part, author Anne had described how she felt while growing up as one of the 6 children of Tony Hillerman. She once again collaborated with her husband on a novel titled ‘Gardens of Santa Fe’. This book went on to become a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Award and also won the New Mexico Award. Author Anne and her husband often collaborate in working on the books of the New Mexico Press Women.

One such book that they presented was ‘Tony Hillerman’s Landscape’, which was awarded many prestigious awards and honors. Being a food critic for the largest newspaper of New Mexico, the Alburquerque Journal, author Anne often gets the opportunity to visit all the 4 star food palace and restaurants in her state, including Espanola, Taos, Cerrilos, and Madrid.

Most of the reviews that she has given for the various food palaces have helped her to win first place honors from the Press Women National Federation. Based on her experience as a food critic for so many years, author Anne has developed the plot of her book titled ‘Santa Fe Flavors’.

Knowing her expertise as a food critic, many food related event organizers ask her to volunteer as a judge. One of the events in which she volunteered is the Girl Scout Cookie Caper. This event featured desserts made from the cookies of Girl Scout and she liked them very much.

Currently, author Anne is working on the development of the plot of her next novel. She is also working as a director of the Workshops of Wordharvest Writers as well as the Conference of the Tony Hillerman Writers. She helped establish both of these organizations in the year 2001. The Conference of the Tony Hillerman Writers is held year in November in Santa Fe. The Leaphorn and Chee series, which was first written by author Tony Hillerman and then by author Anne Hillerman, consists of a total of 20 books published between the years 1970 and 2015.

All the books in the series feature Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, working as Lieutenants in the Navajo tribal police. The first book in the series written by author Anne is titled as ‘Spider Woman’s Daughter’. It was released by the Harper publishers in the year 2013.

At the beginning of this book, it is shown that Bernadette Manuelito, who works as a police officer in the Navajo Nation, is enjoying breakfast with her colleagues. Soon, she sees a truck squealing into a parking lot and then hears sounds of gunfire. When the dust of the gunfire cleared, she saw someone very close to her lying in a pool of blood.

After the incident, the victim battles for his life at the hospital while all the police officers in the squad go on to hunt down the gunman, along with the help of the FBI. Bernadette too wants to get involved in the investigation, but she is disallowed due to a regulation that prevents eyewitnesses from taking part in an investigation. She gets the order to take leave, but she does not seem to relax.

When she learns that her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, has been made the in-charge of finding the gunman, she becomes even more restless to get involved. As both of them move ahead with the investigation, they come to know that one of the old cases involving retired Police Inspector Joe Leaphorn, might be related to the shooting in some way.

Finding important clues every time they dig into the old and new cases together, the husband and wife pair keeps getting closer to the truth. The search makes them inching nearer to a deadly killer, who seems to stop at nothing to prevent him from getting caught. One of the other books written by author Anne Hillerman is titled as ‘Rock With Wings’.

It was published by the Harper publishers in the year 2015. At the start of this book, it is shown that the married couple of Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee, who work as police officers for the Navajo Tribal Cops investigate a couple of perplexing cases under the guidance of their mentor, the legendary Joe Leaphorn.

After doing some good work for a relative, Jim and Bernadette get a chance to remain away from their schedule at the police station. But, two important cases cause them to come back from their vacation. They are made to work on the cases separately, one in Monument Valley and the other in Shiprock. Chee’s investigation makes him come across a few random clues which lead him to a missing woman and a thug.

On the other hand, Bernadette finds her hands full with a drug bust that goes wrong, uncovering of a fire originating from nowhere, and looking into a solar energy project that might cause serious consequences on the Navajo land. Under the guidance of Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Bernadette and Jim Chee navigate through several unexpected obstacles and get confronted by a number of challenges that test their commitment, courage, and skills.
