About Aprilynne Pike

It is her imagination for which the American author Aprilynne Pike is probably best known, having written fantasy and Young Adult fiction for quite some time now. Well known to scores of readers from across the world, she’s gained an international audience, with many of her readers relating to her words and characters. This is largely due to the engaging and compelling manner she writes in, instantly grabbing the attention of the reader from the outset. Working with the form in increasingly innovative and inventive ways, she’s always looking for new and exciting ways with which to express herself.

Drawing from a range of influences too, she really is an inspired author, taking from many different authors before her and making a style very much of her own. Her rich and inventive fantasy worlds are quite unlike any other, bringing her readers in and immersing them in her finely drawn landscapes. This has made her hugely successful over the years too, as her work has resonated on a universal level quite unlike any other. Reaching the top of the bestseller lists on numerous occasion, she’s found readers far and wide, all the while saying something new and unique.

Many of her stories are focused on faeries as this is something that she clearly excels at, using the mythical creatures to startling effect. Turning the tropes of the genre on their head, she says something that’s entirely new in the process, making an idiosyncratic and unique name for herself. This is also true for her characters as well, many of whom ensure that her readers continually come back time and time again. It appears that there’s a lot more to come in the future too, with her writing career carrying onwards and upwards.

Early and Personal Life

Born in 1980 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Aprilynne Pike would grow up enjoying creative writing as a passion of hers from a young age. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, she would take in inspiration from the world around her, continually putting it back into her work. Attending Lewis-Clark State College on a scholarship, she would gain a BA in creative writing at twenty years of age.

Working on her craft as a writer through the years, she would continue to refine and hone her voice as a novelist. Prior to becoming a writer full-time, she would work as a waitress, a childbirth-educator, a doula, and an editor. Currently living in Arizona with her husband and their four children, she continues to write to this present day.

Writing Career

Starting out back in 2009 on the 5th of May, Aprilynne Pike would publish her first novel titled ‘Wings,’ introducing her to the reading public at large. This would lead to a series of novels of the same name, as she would focus on the subject of faeries over the course of her writing career. Reaching the top of the ‘New York Times’ and ‘USA Today’ bestseller lists, she would fast find a level of worldwide success. Writing many stories and essays over the years, she has gone on to become a hugely influential name in her own right, with a lot more to come.

Arabesque

Initially released through the ‘Imaginary Properties LLC’ publishing label, this would first come out back in 2016. It would also mark the fifth title in the ongoing ‘Wings’ series of Young Adult fantasy novels, continuing the story from before. The story itself continues ten years after the previous one with many of the same characters, so it’s best that these are read these in order.

There’s a lot of character development making it a must for fans not only of the genre, but those who’ve been following the series. It provides a lot of insight into the fantasy world previously created, as well as building upon the nature of the characters themselves. This is something that fans of the series will enjoy, as it’s a compelling and interesting perspective of the world with an engaging storyline.

Ten years after the events of the previous book, this sees Tamani and Laurel receive a visit from their niece Rowen. Passionate about ballet, Rowen is a Summer faerie who’s unfortunately been orphaned, coming to spend some time with them. Now she must attend the Scazio Dance Academy which is located in California, but she despises humans, all the while dealing with an ancient mystery presented to Tamani. Will she be able to get along with humans and complete her studies? Can they solve the ancient mystery? What will become of them in arabesque?

Shatter

First published through ‘Random House Books for Young Readers’ this would originally come out in 2018 on the 13th of February. Marking the second title in the ongoing ‘Glitter’ series of novels, it would be another Young Adult fantasy novel from Pike. Continuing on from where the previous book left off, it ties up many loose ends from before, while building upon the fantasy world as a whole.

With a strong central character driving the story forwards, this is definitely an entertaining and compelling novel. There’s a lot to invest in here, from the world to its colorful cast of characters, giving the reader something to really immerse themselves in yet again. Knowing the world well at this point too, Pike wastes no time in getting straight to the heart of the story, really delivering in the process.

Believing herself to have escaped from the Palace of Versailles, Danica feels that she has finally broken free having done whatever it takes to get out of there. Now married to the king, she’s situated right next to the seat of power, with the king having promised her freedom, but the power is proving to be intoxicating. Can they have a life together outside its walls? What will happen when she sees the world around her shatter?
