The “Arcane Society” series by Jayne Ann Krentz is from the genre of historical romance. The series began in the year 2006 with the release of “Second Sight”. There are other series related or a part of the “Arcane Society” books.

Sylvester Jones (a paranoid recluse and a brilliant alchemist) founded the Arcane Society late in the 1600s. He possessed some odd talents of a paranormal sort and spent his whole life on secret research in this field. He performed experiments and recorded results in a lab that was like a fortress that would later become his tomb. It was finally found, it being the lab-tomb of Sylvester the Alchemist, and was later excavated late in the Victorian era. It was done by two of his descendants (Gabrial and Caleb Jones).

The most dangerous secret that he came up with was a formula that he thought would enhance their abilities as a psychic and make whoever had the powers very strong. It works, but there are some scary side effects that come with this power.

Through the years, the Arcane Society has done a lot to hide Sylvester’s formula, but it is something that haunts the Jones family and the Society. Even after four hundred or so years. There are other dark mysteries that the Society is hanging onto, as well. Like an creepy collection of museums that have odd relics and artifacts that are connected to both the paranormal and the arcane. A research facility is used to carry out some studies and experiments that have to do with psychic phenomena are done.

“Second Sight” is the first novel in the “Arcane Society” series and was released in the year 2006. Venetia Milton was broke and going towards being a spinster anyway, so the thought staying at Arcane House would be her only way to create her own paradise. Her job was to take pictures of the artifacts that were collected by an organization that is very secretive. Her employer (who is Gabriel Jones) is the descendant of the founder, and has a sorcerer’s eyes.

She wants to seduce Jones and just leave, but is unable to do so. This is due to his being killed, she finds out, once she gets home. She starts a new life, with some of the money that Jones gave her. Milton even opens up a gallery in London. She is able to pose as a widow, this helps her do business; she also pays a private tribute to her lost and only lover by taking the name Mrs. Jones.

This whim of hers is going to cause trouble, of a kind she did not expect. Mr. Jones is about to come back to her, right into her life again. They have a lot more in common that just a passionate memory (they are bound by an unusual kind of vision), but a terrible threat. Someone has taken a notebook that is hundreds of years old from Arcane House. In the notebook, there is supposed to be a formula that is supposed to enhance the psychic powers, like those Venetia and Gabriel have.

The thief is after more information, even if he has to kill anyone to get it. Like the photographer and cataloger of the treasures of the Arcane Society’s.

“White Lies” is the second novel in the “Arcane Society” series and was released in the year 2007. Claire Lancaster (she is in her thirties and is petite) is a human lie detector and Level Ten para-sensitive. She has found, over time, that anyone with her powers if bound to have relationship problems. She also figures (and is resigned to the fact) that everyone hides behind a facade of some kind or another.

She thinks that meeting family and half sister that she did not even know she had until seven months ago was the wrong thing to do. Her dad gets her to come from California so that she can take part in his business empire. She does not plan to make that mistake a second time.

She meets Archer Lancaster’s (her dad) so called financial consultant named Jake Salter; and is convinced that things are not at all what they seem to be. Salter walks a thin line between deception and the truth; all the while, he reveals things, but resists all at the same time. There are sparks and sizzles, quite a bit more than the usual electricity that a man and a woman have between one another.

They begin investigating, and are caught in all kinds of half-truths, lies, and big storm of secrets. It will demand of all their gifts. They must work together, putting aside all of the distrust that they have for one another to get to the bottom of this conspiracy and murder web they have found themselves in.

“Sizzle and Burn” is the third novel in the “Arcane Society” series and was released in the year 2008. Raine Tallentyre revealed the fact that she had some paranormal abilities, and it was a mistake. Mainly because her relationship came to an end. Aunt Vella (troubled soul but quite gifted) told her never to tell anyone about her powers. Vella, her last blood relative has died, and Raine believes that she will spend the rest of her life alone.

She goes to Shelbyville, Washington to empty out Vella’s house of all of her belongings. Her sensitivity, that is highly developed, makes her find something horrifying. It is a young woman that has been bound and scared in a storage locker, in some basement somewhere. The victim is still alive, but the perpetrator is still out there, running around free.

Zack Jones, an investigator, enters her life and does not warn her he is going to do so. He is one of the few that is not repelled by her powers; this is due to the fact that he has them too. Zack has visions and Raine hears people’s voices. Shortly after they meet, Raine has an experience of thrilling and intense intimacy (physical, mental, and emotional). This is something that she never thought she would feel.

Zack works for the Arcane Society, something that complicates matters. The secret organization ruined Raine’s family by an act of betrayal a long time ago. She is not ready to trust them right now. A killer makes her his target. Plus, Nightshade (a group of psychic thugs) is out there somewhere. Raine and Zack have to rely on just one another, not their powers and abilities.
