Ashley Schumacher
Ashley Schumacher is a young adult writer with a degree in creative writing from the University of North Texas. She lives in a small town with her lovable husband and more books than are strictly necessary.

She likes snacks, stories, and games. And sometimes all at the same time. Her favorite stories to read and tell are the ones that lift up the corners of our reality and find the everyday magic that is rumbling underneath. Sometimes this looks like learning to laugh after tragedy or finding friendship in strange places. Other times it looks like a stone circle on an ancient hill or a wardrobe in some spare room.

When she isn’t daydreaming or writing, she loves watching Disney movies, reading, playing the piano, playing stupid amounts of board and video games with her husband, browse used bookstores looking for hidden treasures, and sometimes leafing through the dozens of folktale and fairy tale anthologies she continues to buy for “research”. She also likes singing Disney songs, finding exciting and new ways to pester her family, or attempting to find her inside voice, which has been missing since birth, sadly.

Ashley’s inspired by just about everything. Books that make your heart clench you love them so very much, the way that museums feel like they’re labyrinths of artwork built only to make you feel something, snippets of conversations overheard in grocery stores, and TV series that sweep you up with their world, characters, and scores.

She is also intrigued how people move in the world when they believe they are alone versus when they are moving in a crowd and how people talk to one another when they believe nobody’s listening. When she cannot hear what somebody’s saying, she’ll make it up based off of their facial expressions and body language; an exercise that may just be her favorite non-writing writing exercise.

She is always absorbing her surroundings and churning them into little bits of narrative. It is her favorite part of the writing process, truly, trying to show her readers the world she’s built inside her head and hoping that they like it enough to want to stay.

Not writing is just as important to how she writes as putting words down on the page. That said, this is still the toughest part, whether it’s because life’s getting in the way, or just because she needs to take a break.

“Amelia Unabridged” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2021. Sparks fly between two teens as they grapple with love, grief, and the future.

Amelia Griffin, eighteen years old, is obsessed with the famous Orman Chronicles, written by the reclusive young prodigy named N. E. Endsley. They are books that brought her and Jenna, her best friend, together after Amelia’s dad left and her family imploded. So when Jenna and Amelia get the chance to go to a book festival with Endsley attending, Amelia’s ecstatic. It is the perfect way to kick off their final summer before college.

In a single heartbeat, it all goes terribly wrong. When Jenna gets the chance to meet the author but Amelia doesn’t, the pair have a major blowout fight like they have never experienced. And before Amelia has the chance to fix things, Jenna gets killed in a freak car accident. Amelia, now grief stricken and without her best friend to help guide her, is questioning everything she was planning for her future.

When a rare and mysterious edition of the Orman Chronicles shows up, Amelia’s certain that it came from Jenna somehow. Tracking the book back to some obscure yet enchanting bookstore in Michigan, Amelia’s stunned to find she’s face-to-face with the handsome and enigmatic N. E. Endsley himself, the reason Jenna and Amelia fought and possibly the clue to what Jenna wanted to tell her the whole time.

“Amelia Unabridged” is all about finding strength and hope inside yourself, and maybe falling in love as you do it.

This is a glittering love letter of a debut, aimed directly at the hearts and souls of book worms everywhere. The complex and layered stories shared by sweet Amelia and revised by Nolan are sure to break your heart and bind it all back together again, sealed with a perfect kiss. A quirky, beautiful, and magical tale about best friendships, broody authors, and the imaginary worlds that we call home. Ashley makes you believe in the impossibility of happily ever afters, with her lyrical prose and a romance sure to sweep you right off your feet.

“Full Flight” is the second stand alone novel and was released in the year 2022. Everybody else in the small town of Enfield, Texas, refers to autumn as football season, however for the forty-three members of the Fighting Enfield Marching Band, it is contest season. And for Anna James, a new saxophonist, it is her first opportunity to prove herself as the great musician she’s trying so hard to be.

When she gets assigned a duet with Weston Ryan, mellophone player, the boy that her small-minded town thinks of as being nothing but trouble, she is equal parts intimidated and thrilled. However while he helps her with this duet, and she sees the smile that he seems to save only for her, she cannot help but feel like she is helping him out with something as well.

Her strict parents learn that she has been seeing him in secret and keep them both apart, Weston and Anna learn what it really means to fight for something that they love. With the marching contest coming up and the two falling rather hard for each other, the unthinkable winds up happening. It leaves Anna grappling to find a way forward without him.

“Full Flight” is how first love shapes each and every one of us, even after it is gone.

This novel, filled with heartache, humor, and whimsy, explores the many notes that grief and love have along with the happiness that can be found in the softer moments in between. Ashley delivers a bittersweet symphony of self-awareness and heartbreak set to the wondrous lyrics of first love.
