The Avery Shaw Mysteries is a series written by Amanda M. Lee, about a happy-go-lucky and daring reporter, Avery Shaw. The series is set in Michigan, in the present day and revolves around the life of Avery, as she works very hard, developing her skills as a sleuthing reporter and getting muddled up in all sorts of troubles on every front of her life. There is never a moment that isn’t upbeat in this murder mystery series, where Avery is not trying to save her own life or the relations with those closest to her.
The main character in this suspenseful series, is a young lady with a very avid sense of curiosity and a nearly insane dedication to her job as a local newspaper reporter. Avery Shaw enjoys hitting on to really big stories, often murders or missing person cases, with twists around every corner of her life. She works really hard to find out just that bit more of information and often chooses to go undercover, dealing with criminals and masterminds, despite that is most often is at her own detriment. She will do almost anything to pursue the best scoop, yet with the way things consistently happen to her, the best scoops often pursue her instead. Often she wonders if she will make it out alive to tell the tale. Her character is also described as having a contagious mood, if she is not happy, nobody around her will be. Avery Shaw enjoys wearing strange outfits and takes particular fondness of shoes. She is a little eccentric and full of attitude – the author often warns that the series contains snarky comments, sarcasm and is not for the easily offended individual.
Other characters in the series include her grandfather and her mother, which Avery often argues much with about trivial, comical things, such as her wardrobe. The series begins off where she has an attractive ex-boyfriend Jake, the county sheriff, who is involved with a number of cases that she is also involved in reporting on. Her love life is just as complicated as her day job, as she seems to be an expert at getting muddled up in her previous affairs and has a hard time resolving them, which adds extra tensions when she is constantly putting her life in danger for her work. She will also go so far as to follow-up on old love interests to get in her latest scoops. This part of her life also develops as the series progresses on, new loves spring up for her, but how she copes with them and her hard-hitting reporter job, not even she knows how she will do it! The books have a witty and nearly sarcastic sense of humour to them – that is, for Avery, all these troubles are just an ordinary series of events in a usual week of her unusual life. She has a cousin called Lexie who comes into the series a bit later on, living with her and being more of a nuisance than not – when will peace every come into the life of this eclectic reporter?
The first book in the series is called Who, What, Where, When, Die’ and begins by introducing to you who this young, spunky girl is and how life’s demands just keep piling on to her never-ending list of worries. Probably the best place to start, although the series contains eight books in total, each book being about 200-400 pages long. The plot structure is generally the same, Avery finds a scoop that she can’t resist and ends up pursuing it to the point of danger, while having to keep it a secret from her loved ones and wondering if she will make it out of each tricky situation alive. The scenarios and the setting do change around with each book though and there is never a dull moment. In the third book, Buried Leads’, Avery for instance, does something to upset her boss and gets put short of being fired. She really has to find a way to get back in her boss’ good books before she loses her job and what she lives for! Just as she can’t seem to get a break, has a stalker online that is making life challenging and stumbles into a new relationship with somebody who saved her life before, the story of the century crosses her path. A missing person mystery tied to a rich mother in the Northern Suburbs may be just what she needs to get her career path back on track, but this case is more than it appears! Her ex-boyfriend is also never happy when she meets somebody new and she finds herself once again, in over her head with things.
Avery’s life is not always so tumultuous and the series has moments of ease with everyday life inserts, where things are seemingly going according to plan. Of course for Avery, things always find a way to deviate from the plan. In the fourth book of the Avery Shaw Mysteries, Shot Off the Presses’, things start off and seem to be, in actual fact, normal for once. She seems to be settling into her new relationship, her family has not been bothering her for a week and the cases she’s been reporting on have a somewhat ordinary nature… Until there is a mass shooting somewhere in town and she’s assigned to report on the case along with her ex, the sheriff as well as her new partner, who do not see eye to eye. To top it all off, new members within the newspaper have arrived to lay down new laws on media leaks and her mother is trying to convince her that Thundercats shoes are not appropriate footgear for going out in, Avery is very quickly thrown back into the depths of troubled water.
