Bad Kitty Series
The Bad Kitty is a series by Tarrytown-born writer Nick Bruel whose legal name is Nick Tung Ming Bruel (December 1978—). Nick, who attended Haverford College between 1983 and 1987, has been writing since he was a first grader. However, Nick debuted in 2004, following the release of his book Boing; and specializes in comics and juvenile literature.
Books in the Bad Kitty Series
The works in the Bad Kitty series were originally picture books but have since been adapted into chapter books too. First dated October 1, 2005; Bad Kitty is book one in the similarly-titled series. The protagonist is Kitty, a pampered but mischievous kitten.
The hitherto good Kitty becomes rebellious after her handlers exhaust cat food which they substitute with alphabetical letters-styled vegetables, prompting alphabetical letters-based statements showing Kitty’s hostile and destructive actions against family members and items. Eventually, the remorseful Kitty makes up for its bad behavior when the family restocks with alphabetical carnivore-friendly food.
First dated July 24, 2007, Poor Puppy is second in his Bad Kitty series. Kitty ignores its best friend Puppy’s invitation to play together. Subsequently, the lonesome Puppy turns to its numbered and alphabetically-listed toys until the tired small dog falls asleep wherein she starts fantasizing about playing alphabetical games in diverse alphabetical countries.
Originally dated September 13, 2011, A Bad Kitty Christmas is third book in Nick’s Bad Kitty series. This is about Kitty’s mischief on Christmas Eve, wherein the kitten’s bad moods prompts her to damage festivity items; Kitty’s actions are showed using images whose captions include highlighted alphabetical nouns that match with alphabetical verbs.
Initially dated July 22, 2014, Bad Kitty’s Tasty Treats is the fourth book in the Bad Kitty series. As presents for her upcoming birthday, Kitty asks for alphabetically-listed wild and domestic birds and animals that include Ape, Elephant, Donkey, Kiwi, Quail, Walrus, and Xerus. First dated May 12, 2015; Bad Kitty Does Not Like Candy is fifth in the serialized Bad Kitty.
The hungry Kitty is offered various delicacies, including fish, beef, moose, octopus, and walrus. However, Kitty rejects all of them and adamantly insists on the sweet-looking and seemingly tasty candy instead, despite neither being adapted for it nor having eaten it previously.
First dated May 12, 2015; Bad Kitty Does Not Like Dogs is sixth in the Bad Kitty series. Kitty and Puppy have a conflict of interest, wherein Puppy wants the napping Kitty to wake up so that they can play games ranging from basketball and baseball to soccer and chess. The disinterested Kitty wants them to have—and wins in—a sleeping competition instead.
Initially dated August 7, 2015; Bad Kitty Makes Comics…and You Can Too! is seventh in the Bad Kitty series. Kitty was torn between playing with the eager Puppy and napping, when a visiting kitten comes to show her give her drawing lessons. Thus, the book’s topics range from the tools used to write and draw comics to the sound effects and comic effects.
Originally dated August 9, 2016; Bad Kitty Scaredy-Cat is eighth in the Bad Kitty series. First, there are alphabetical adjectives—ranging from Angry to Muddled to Zestful—praising the then courageous Kitty. Unfortunately, Kitty now has anxiety disorder after coming face-to-face with frightening monsters that, one night, knocked and tricked her—using the trick or treat call—into opening their door; wherein she met alphabetically-listed monsters, including an alien, bigfoot, ectoplasm, dragon and hag.
Originally dated July 16, 2019; Bad Kitty Does Not Like Thanksgiving is ninth in his Bad Kitty series. The selfish Kitty loves—but not merely like—thanksgiving because of her greed for turkey that she plans to steal and eat all by herself. Unfortunately, as Kitty reaches out for the turkey on the table, she accidentally topples the accompaniments—cranberry sauce and green beans and mashed potatoes—that, together with the turkey, hits her head seriously.
Originally dated September 6, 2019, Bad Kitty Does Not Like Video Games is tenth in Nick’s Bad Kitty series. The video games-loving Kitty is torn between playing indoors and outdoors. The pet owner conditionally orders the reluctant her to draw and read outdoors, where Kitty—who had been enjoying a fence-jumping and carrot-grabbing bunny-inspired video game indoors—starts imitating the bunny by jumping onto, and plucking leaves from, a tree.
Initially dated September 6, 2016; Bad Kitty Does Not Like Snow is eleventh in his Bad Kitty series. Kitty instantly hates snow after experiencing it for the first time, prompting her Internet search that informs her about—and motivates her outdoor inspection of—the snow’s cold, wet, soft, and slippery characteristics.
Originally dated August 10, 2019; Bad Kitty: Searching for Santa is twelfth in his Bad Kitty series. Kitty reviews her end-of-year resolutions to see if she has actualized them before writing about it in a letter that she wants to hand-deliver to the Santa himself.
Originally dated May 11, 2021, Bedtime for Bad Kitty is thirteenth in Nick’s Bad Kitty series. The playful Kitty dislikes bedtime, particularly because it involves tooth brushing, dressing for bed, and relieving herself; Kitty especially opts to play with a yarn instead, but gives in when reminded it is also story time.
