An American writer hailing from New York, the author of romance and contemporary fiction Barbara Bretton is a world renowned writer with many of her readers coming from a diverse and expansive background. Knowing her market well, she has managed to amass herself a following over the years throughout her career that would be the envy of any up-and-coming novelist hoping to make a break into the industry. Focusing largely on romance, she has been able to transform the genre into something new and original, creating her own niche in the process, building something different, as she subverts the cliches and conventions of the genre.
Early and Personal Life
Born in 1950 on the 25th of June, Barbara Bretton was born and raised in the vicinity of New York City, just on the outskirts, where she grew up with a strong passion for both reading and writing. Focusing on both reading and writing throughout her childhood, she held a love of the written word that would inform her adult writing career that was to follow. Taking the time out to follow it up in her spare time, it was always more of a hobby for her, as she would fully take it up later on in life at the age of thirty-one years old.
Taking in inspiration from the world around her around her, it was her experiences that would greatly inform both her and her work, building it into her material. Whilst she started to become more formally educated in the craft at thirty-one when she would start to take it up full-time, she always held a keen passion for it throughout her life. This is something that never went away, especially as she started to elaborate on it later on, with her writing career finally coming to fruition upon the debut of her initial novel.
Having had a number of experience prior to becoming an author, it was these life experiences that she was able to put into her work, giving a sense of grounded realism unlike any other. Knowing what her readers wanted as well has been one of her key attributes too, as she provides her audience with more of what they’re looking for. Whilst there is a populist dimension to her work, though, she has also attracted the attention of many a critic and reviewer over the years as well, with many also singing her praises.
Still writing to this very day, she has a lot more to come yet as she continues to write from her home living near Princeton in New Jersey. Spending a lot of time with her husband in Maine too, she constantly manages to come up with new ideas that help inform her next up-and-coming novel. With a lot more to come, she shows no signs of stopping anytime soon, as her writing career carries on into the foreseeable future for some time to come.
Writing Career
Sending out her first manuscript on the 21st of February in 1982, she soon received a response telling her that she was going to be published and the rest is history. Bringing out ‘Love Changes’ in 1983 through the Harlequin romance publishing label she was soon well on her way to becoming a fully fledged romance novelist. Creating a number of other novels after that, along with a collection of series and franchises, she went on to become one of the most prolific authors in the industry to date.
With over eight separate franchises so far, along with a number of different stand-alone books as well, she definitely has an extensive backlog of work. Bringing out series such as her PAX line of books that transpose the romantic genre against that of the anti-terrorist agency, combining both suspense and romance. Alongside this there’s also other series including her ‘Rocky Hill Holiday’ series of novels, set around the location as well as thematically following the seasonal holidays for each title in the series.
Winning awards over the years as well, she has also managed to garner a huge amount of critical acclaim as well as her commercial success. Receiving recognition for her various contributions to the genre and the art-form, she has managed to amass herself a huge amount of positive attention over the years. This has allowed her to not only become highly regarded by both her peers and contemporaries alike, but has also helped her achieve commercial success as well.
Over the years she has also seen a number of her articles being published throughout a variety of highly prestigious publications as well. With outlets such as The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Home News, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Romantic Times, Herald News and the Somerset Gazette publishing her work she has gone on to become one of the most prolific authors to date. Not only that, but she has also starred on NPR on the Susan Stamberg Show, another highly regarded media appearance, leading to her becoming a highly regarded author and writer.
With a lot more more to come yet, she will continue to write and publish her work at a regular and consistent rate, something which her many fans have come to appreciate over the years. Maintaining a presence in the industry, she keeps up a lot of other hobbies as well, such as knitting, as she ensures that her personal life informs her professional work and vice-versa. It’s this balance that makes sure that there’s plenty more novels planned on the horizon, thus ensuring that her career will grow from strength-to-strength for some time yet.
Destiny’s Child
Originally published in 1995 on the 1st of August, this was first brought out through the Mira Books publishing label, a title that was released during the early stages of Bretton’s career. Marking the third and final title in the ongoing Time Travel Trilogy, it combines elements of fantasy to illuminate its more romantic underpinnings. A creative and interesting title, it brings the narrative of the previous two to a close, giving the entire trilogy a sense of closure, with a franchise that really helped establish many of her big ideas.
Featuring the story of Dakota this time it sees her not exactly understanding men in great detail, as she soon finds herself pitted up against Patrick Devane. An angry and extremely stubborn man the two of them initially clash, something which infuriates him as nobody has ever challenged him before. Not only that he’s never allowed a woman to get close to him during the course of his life, not even his daughter, something which Dakota is dismayed by as she feels the young girl needs a family. Will she overcome his barriers? Can they make an item? What will become of destiny’s child?
Spun By Sorcery
Initially released through the Berkley publishing house this time, it was released on the 2nd of November in 2010 to an already eager audience. Marking the third title in the ongoing ‘Sugar Maple’ series of novels, it really works at bringing and incorporating the many elements from the previous novels and making them work in a new setting. Alongside this it also manages to provide a number of twists and turns as well, something which keeps the reader on the edge-of-their-seats and guessing right until the very end.
Starting out with Chloe looking to settle down with her husband to be Luke Mackenzie, she was hoping to make a life for herself in the town of Sugar Maple. That’s going to be difficult, though, especially when the town and everyone in it has disappeared completely off the map nowhere to be found. Entering the scene is her old friend Janice with her cat in tow as, despite Chloe’s best efforts with her ‘Book of Spells’, she can’t find anything, but that’s going to all change as they head back to Salem. Will they find where Sugar Maple has disappeared to? Can they uncover the truth? What exactly has been spun by sorcery?
