Barbara Monajem is an American author of fiction. She has always been interested in writing, penning her first story about fantastical apple tree gnomes at the age of eight. She dabbled in musicals put on in her neighborhood and her share of teen melodrama, which she has used to propel some of her writing, naturally (or supernaturally).

She has children and published a fantasy story for children when her children were young. Now that they are older, she mostly writes in the mystery and adult romance genre. Monajem lives close to Atlanta, Georgia, and stays in touch with a constantly changing variety of friends, relatives, and stray cats. She likes to write Regency historical romance novellas with sexy themes that feature spirited heroines, bold heroes, and sometimes even magic.

Barbara Monajem is the author of many novels and series. Her books include Christmas Kisses, the Bayou Gavotte series, the Wicked Christmas Wishes romance series, the May Day Mischief series, and the Scandalous Kisses series.

She has worked on a variety of other novels with other authors including Blood & Moonlight, the Regency Christmas Collection, Mills & Boon Christmas, Captivated by His Kiss, An Improper Christmas, Tantalizing Teasers, Rakes and Rogues, A Very Wicked Christmas, and A Midsummer’s Kiss. Improper Christmas Nights and Christmas Kisses are two holiday collections that she has collaborated on with other authors.

Barbara Monajem has written a number of other novellas that include Notorious Eliza, The Wanton Governess, The Unrepentant Rake, To Rescue or Ravish?, and others. She has contributed to the series a Most Peculiar Season, Lady of the Flames, and the A Most Peculiar Season Series Boxed Set.

Her popular Bayou Gavotte series is a supernatural tour de force. Monajem has written the book to include hereditary vampires as well as characters with paranormal abilities and the rock star Constantine Dufray, a vigilante Native American singer and musician. She says that it’s fun to explore what is unusual and she enjoys writing about the paranormal.

Susan Squires says that the novel is a “breath of fresh air” and has the spirit of Dead Until Dark, part of the True Blood series by Charlaine Harris. The series has four books, starting with Sunrise in a Garden of Love and Evil ending with Back to Bite You.

In Sunrise in a Garden of Love and Evil, the first book in this supernatural series, the story takes place in Bayou Gavotte, Louisiana. Even though it’s a relatively small town, that doesn’t stop the fetish clubs and blackmail and even murder from happening. Guess you can’t always get everything that you want.

Things really start to pick up when a resident of the town calls the cops. She is Ophelia Beliveau, and she is a vampire. Not just that, but she is a vamp that could really use some blood and a relationship if one’s going to fall into her lap. Regardless, she can’t stand the fact that someone is messing up her garden and wants the authorities to put a stop to whoever keeps desecrating it. And her hunger is starting to grow.

The pretty young woman has always been quite irresistible. However, while Ophelia’s friends were growing up, she was growing some fangs too. Not your standard rate of development and they definitely weren’t teaching what’s going on with her during health class. Olivia was even more dangerous to boys as a vampire than she had been as a teenage girl. But the same temptations and the same dangers are never far behind.

Now, she is in more danger than ever before. She figures that there’s really only one kind of way to deal with it all and that’s to do her best to avoid men. When she’s alone she has no way to satisfy that craving for love and blood. One way or another, she’s going to go hungry, and her garden will surely continue to be ruined by then.

Meanwhile, there is murder going on in this small town and blackmail too. And this Louisiana girl (and vampire, okay) happens to be at the center of that. Meanwhile, there’s Gideon O’Toole to consider. The detective is sworn to get to the bottom of all of this, but what if Ophelia isn’t ready to bare her secrets?

The second book of the series is titled Tastes of Love and Evil. It was published in 2010. The main character in this book is Rose Fairburn, not Ophelia from before. Her vampire nature is strong, but it does not mean that she is going to be protected from everything in the world. Desperately trying to escape her past, she can only focus on one thing. Vampires can’t go on when they do not have blood to feed on or sex (in this supernatural world written by Monajem).

She figures that she must give up love and she’s fine with that. But then along comes tall and handsome Jack Tallis, a trustworthy man that seems too good to be true. More than that, Rose is even starting to think that she may be able to trust him. Human men aren’t supposed to be able to resist the appeal of a vampire, but Jack is the exception. Turns out that’s not the only thing that he’s hiding.

Jack really seems able to resist the vamps, and on top of that, he has a few problems of his own. He has hit men from the underworld hot on his tail and is trying to lose them, by vanishing. When love seems possible and Jack and Rose might be able to find something there, he disappears into the air.

This Louisiana town is full of mystery, but for the first time to Rose, falling in love actually seems like it is possible. Jack is the one to suddenly vanish into the air, and Rose has no idea where he went. The shadows are covering up secrets, and with the activity going on in the Bayou Gavotte, it seems that maybe someone needs to uncover them. Maybe in the fetish clubs of this small town? Pick up this book to find out for yourself.
