Ben Hale is an author of fantasy books and an avid snowboarder from Utah. He grew up with a passion for learning, and it’s this thirst for knowledge that saw him dive into music, sports, and academic endeavors. After a year in college, he took voluntary work in Brazil and mastered the art of speaking fluently in three languages. He graduated from University of Florida & soon after started several successful businesses before publishing his debut novel in June 2012. By the end of the year, he had sold more than ten thousand copies of his The Second Draeken War book and switched to fulltime writing.

His Chronicles of Lumineia series represents a stretch young adult series that has sold more than 250,000 copies and gradually continues to expand its fan base across all ages. Each of Ben Hale’s books has been inspired by his beautiful wife and their six children.

Elseerian

Elseerian is the first book in The Chronicles of Lumineia series by Ben Hale. The story follows two characters, Terran, an orphan boy with a wild origin story and Lyrie an elf princess trying to be normal with an affinity for music. The book kicks off with the ominous death of a hero and the relentless hunt for other would-be influential figureheads. The story is filled with action and progresses on steadily, and there are some bits of romance as both Lyrie and Terran have schoolyard crushes on each other- but this novel is more of an adventure type story.

The Elseerian is woven in a bit of the famous style of Tolkien. Taryn Elseerian is a half-human half-elf who knows nothing about his family. It’s believed that his parents perished in a shipwreck while sailing to the island of Sri Rosen where Taryn has been taken care of by an old elf swordmaster, Murai. As fascinating as Taryn is with different weapons and also fighting without any weapons, he is worse in any other area. Activities such as camping, cooking, or simple social skills are difficult for him. But in this way, he is almost a refreshing change from the traditional “all-everything” hero. If there’s a downside to Taryn’s character as written, well it would be that he’s so good at feats of endurance, strength, and fighting. More than one instance, Taryn fights a large group of enemies and emerges a winner each time. He is also able to break into what appears to be an impenetrable fortress, where hundreds and thousands of soldiers are on high alert.

Of Tarynn’s companions, Liri is the best-written character. She is loyal, charismatic, personable, and she’s always sending signals Taryn’s way, but the problem is that he is so socially incompetent and never recognizes them. On the other hand, Mae is a mystery on her own, but it almost seems like Ben Hale drops her strange angst somewhere in the middle of the story. Overall every character in the book is beautifully written, with a sturdy character base to work from. The pacing for most of the story is brilliant, with plenty of action. While the cast is small, every character is memorable, enjoyable and the action is heavy, bearing a resemblance to R.A Salvatore books, The DemonWars Saga.

Jack of Thieves

Jack of Thieves is the first book in The Master Thief series by Ben Hale. We are introduced to the Thieves Guild, which is famously known for their ability to steal anything they want. The elite members of this group have robbed nobles of reputation, wealth, and even their honor. The Guildmaster rules the members with brutality and fear, and yet his name and his history are mysterious. From the bottom of the Evermist swamp, he finds a master thief who can help him reclaim his lost glory and power.

Young and self-assertive Jack Myst has garnered the Guildmaster’s attention. His achievements mark his potential while his cunning and audacity make him lethal. After several years of preparations, a simple invitation from the guild is all that he wishes for. When he gets the invitation, his hunt begins, and there isn’t anything he can’t steal.

Jack of Thieves is a fun and interesting and exciting adventure across the land of Lumineia. It follows a young man on his mission to avenge the death of his mother. Jack isn’t the main character of this story and not a bad guy either. He is a thief but one with a conscience. He is arrogant, cocky, and very charming when he wants to be. There are times you’ll want to hug him and times where you will want to smack the smile off his face. At the beginning of the story, Jack is found stealing from a well-known lord when the Thieves Guild catches him. They invite him to join them, and he pretends that joining them hasn’t been his plans all along because he doesn’t want them to suspect his true motives. He is on the hunt- seeking revenge on three thieves who murdered his mother, and he will unleash it through the Guild.

The Flesh of War

The Flesh of War is the first book in The Warsworn Trilogy. Forged for battles, the rock trolls have no opponents of equal strength. They train from the moment they are born, endure cruel conditioning, and tattoo their skin with every single kill. They have become the flesh of war, and their history of honor is forgotten. A bounty has been given, one which calls the slaughter of their race. To survive the extermination, they must awaken to what they’ve lost before their adversaries begin to gather.

Born amid a deadly conflict, Tryton bears the heart of peace. While his talent command respect, his nature is the ultimate weapon and to control it, he must rise and lead his people without sacrificing himself. The future of his people lies with him, but the seeds of doomsday have already been planted.

Ben Hale is remarkable at writing plot. All his books have fantastic pacing, and this trilogy debut is no exception. This is the type of novel where you plan to read it for ten minutes before going to bed, but the next time you check the clock you realize is five hours later. The chapters build-up, and the distinct story threads build together satisfyingly. For those who’ve read any novels in The Second Draeken War series or The White Mage Saga, you’ll enjoy novel even though the scope is a bit different.
