Benjamin Netanyahu was born on October 21, 1949, in Tel Aviv. His parents were Tzila Segal, born in Petah Tikva, and Benzion Netanyahu, born in Warsaw. His family originally bore the surname Mileikowsky, which was changed to Netanyahu following his father’s immigration to Mandatory Palestine. Benzion Netanyahu was a historian, and his grandfather was a rabbi and Zionist writer.

Netanyahu is the second of three children, with an older brother, Yonatan Netanyahu, a former Israeli military officer, and a younger brother, Iddo Netanyahu. The family moved to the United States in 1956, where Netanyahu attended Cheltenham High School in Pennsylvania while his father was employed at Dropsie College.

In 1967, Netanyahu returned to Israel and served in the Israel Defense Forces for five years, training as a combat soldier and working with a special forces unit.

Netanyahu has been married three times and has three children. His son, Yair Netanyahu, is an Israeli political podcaster living in Florida. His current wife, Sara Ben-Artzi, married in 1991, is the mother of two of his children.

Political Career

Benjamin Netanyahu joined the Likud party and became its chair in 1993, serving as the leader of the opposition. The Likud party, established in 1973, was formed from an alliance of several right-wing parties in Israel. In 1996, Netanyahu was elected prime minister, focusing on security issues and questioning the Oslo Accords during his term.

In 1999, Netanyahu’s term ended following Likud’s defeat by Ehud Barak’s party. He later served as a minister from 2003 to 2005.
