About Bernie Sanders

Early and Personal Life

Bernie Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941 on the 8th of September to a working-class Jewish family. Sanders attended Brooklyn College before graduating from the University of Chicago in 1964, where he was a protest organizer for the civil rights movement. In 1968, Sanders moved to Vermont and started his political career. His first foray into politics came in the early to mid-1970s when he ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns.

In 1981, he was elected the independent mayor of Burlington, a position he was reelected to three times. Later, in 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served 16 years in the House before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006, becoming the first non-Republican to hold the seat in 152 years. Sometime later Sanders was reelected into the Senate in 2012 and later in 2018.

Sanders married Deborah Shiling Messing in 1964, and the couple spent several months at an Israeli kibbutz. They divorced later in 1966 and Sanders had his only biological child, Levi, with Susan Campbell Mott in 1969. In 1988, Bernie married Jane O’Meara Driscoll and the two visited the Soviet Union shortly after the wedding. Sanders regards Jane’s three children as his own.

Writing Career

Bernie Sanders has had a long and successful career as a writer, with his work having been published in multiple books. His first publication was Outsider in the White House, written with Huck Gutman, which was released in 2015. The same year, he was part of a panel which wrote a chapter titled ‘Why Americans Should Take Back the Media,’ which was included in ‘The Future of Media: Resistance and Reform in the 21st Century.’

He has continued to write since then, with ‘The Speech’ released in 2015, followed by ‘Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In’ in 2016, ‘Bernie Sanders Guide to Political Revolution’ in 2017, and ‘Where We Go from Here’ in 2018. Our Revolution
