Some of the popular standalone books written by her include Two Strangers, The Forgotten Family, Battles Lost and Won, Diamonds in the Dust, Fighting the Shadows, The Day Will Come, The Uncertain Years, Hold On To Your Dreams, etc. Beryl was born and raised in London and currently resides in Hampshire. While growing up, she was surrounded by avid and enthusiastic readers in her family. She claims that books have been an important part of her entire life. Beryl has learned a lot from books and considers them responsible for the way her personality has shaped up. During her young age, Beryl dreamed of becoming a singer. But, there were not enough funds with her parents to help her pursue her dream. So, she shifted her focus towards earning money and joined an office.

Beryl is said to have worked on a post as low as a tea-girl and going all the way up to be a credit controller. The hobbies of author Beryl include reading, playing golf, writing, and swimming. Beryl grew up during the time of the Second World War. Before deciding to try her hand at writing fiction, she worked in various jobs. Working in an aircraft factory’s inspection office was one of them. After she left this job, Beryl started focusing on honing her writing skills and writing her first book. She was 71 years old when her first book was published. The Open Door is the novel with which she made her debut in the field of writing. Since then, she has penned more than 20 novels. Beryl was a part of a writers’ group when she was working on her first novel.

The exposure to a soothing environment and the company of other aspiring writers boosted her confidence. It also helped her to learn many things about novel writing and publishing. Beryl loves to travel a lot. She always tries to take out time from her busy schedule to visit exciting places. However, she never skips her writing schedules and considers it to be her number one priority. Various critics and literary magazines like Booklist have praised Beryl’s work by labeling them as heartwarming, captivating, and charming. Many others have described her novels as fulfilling, lively, wonderful, motivating, and joyful to read.

A popular book written by author Beryl Matthews in her writing career is entitled ‘The Forgotten Family’. It was first released in 2006 and re-released by Severn House publication in 2007. The central characters mentioned in this book include Queenie Bonner, Harry, Mary Warrender, Albert Warrender, Eleanor, and several others. Beryl has set the story in Whitechapel, London, at the time of the year 1890. Initially, it is depicted that Queenie Bonner was born in a large family residing in the slums of London. She was just two years old when her parents sold her away to a rich family living in a big house located in the countryside. After coming to the new home, Queenie seems to be confused and frightened. She begs to be sent back to her original parents and original home. But, her new parents, Mary and Albert Warrender, tell her that she will now live with them for the rest of her life and their house is her new home. The Warrenders even change her name to Eleanor and begin to raise her as their own daughter. Queenie Bonner misses her nine siblings, especially her favorite Harry, and yearns to get back with them.

With the passage of time, Queenie forgets her actual family and even accepts her identity as Eleanor. She starts loving and respecting Mary & Albert as her parents. After fifteen years, Mary leaves the world and Albert informs Eleanor about her large Bonner family. He even helps her in tracing her forgotten siblings and parents. Eleanor’s search for her real family holds distress, pleasure, and danger as she slowly learns what had happened to her brothers and sisters in the years that she was away from them. Eleanor succeeds in tracing 8 of her siblings, but she is not able to find the ninth. Her only missing sibling is Harry, whom she longs to meet the most. Eleanor is determined to not rest until she has found Harry and completed her family. She wonders where could Harry be and what is stopping her from locating him.

Another mind-blowing novel penned by author Beryl is known as ‘Diamonds in the Dust’. It was originally published in 2008 and Allison & Busby published it again in 2015. Beryl has set this novel in London in 1920. The essential characters created by Beryl for this novel include Dora Bentley, Lily Bentley, Harriet Bentley, Tom Bentley, and a few others. Initially, it is shown that Lily, Tom, and Dora are siblings. After the death of their father, their mother starts working at a clothing factory in the night shift. The three children also develop the habit of fending for themselves as there is no other option to make ends meet. Due to the tight schedule of their widowed mother, they are able to see her only on Sundays and during breakfasts. When Dora Bentley becomes 18 years old, she finds a job as a maid to assist her mother in managing the family expenses. She also looks after her siblings when their mother is not at home.

One day, the children’s mother does not show up for breakfast. Dora becomes worried about her mother. She visits the clothing factory to inquire about her, but the gatekeeper tells her that no one by the name of her mother, Harriet Bentley, worked there. Dora becomes even more worried, but knows that her mother would not leave her kids and run away. They loved her as much as she loved them. The three siblings ask for the help of their neighbor and an ex-policeman to start investigating the mysterious disappearance of their mother. This novel entertained the readers throughout the world. It received great reviews from one and all and went on to become immensely popular.

Books often have alternate titles for a variety of reasons. If they are re-released, or sometimes a different name in a different country etc.
