Beth Revis is a renowned American novelist and a New York Times best-selling author of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, science fiction, and young adult novels. She has written several widely successful book series, including the Across the Universe book series, Paper Hearts book series, and the Give Dark My Love book series. Revis made her debut in the world of writing and publishing with the novel called Across the Universe. It went on to feature on the NY Times Bestseller List in 2011. Following its tremendous success, she wrote two sequels in subsequent years. In addition to the full-length novels, she has also penned three short stories, one standalone novel, and one novella in the same universe. The short stories of this universe have been edited by Terri Windling, Ellen Datlow, Kelley Armstrong, and Melissa Marr.
In 2015, Revis began a new series called Paper Hearts. This series is based on writing & publishing. Revis started it as a collection of comments and informational essays in response to the questions asked by aspiring writers on Wattpad. After it gained a lot of popularity, she rewrote the collection and divided it into 3 separate volumes. In 2016, Razorbill published Revis’s 2nd standalone novel. The works of Revis have also featured in numerous young adult compilations and anthologies. Her novels are available in over 20 languages. Currently, Revis is working on the development of a new book for teens. Author Revis was born in North Carolina, United States and she still resides in the rural region of the state. She was brought up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Revis is happily married and is blessed with a son. Her family comprises of her loving dogs in addition to her husband and son. C.S. Lewis is the all-time favorite author of Revis.
Before trying her hand at writing novels, Revis graduated from the North Carolina State University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education. She also earned a minor in history. Later, Revis earned her Master of Arts degree in English Literature. Her area of concentration was fantasy. Following her post-graduation, Revis started working as a school teacher. Her classes were mostly filled with samurai, ancient monsters, and Greek Gods. As she had developed an interest in writing at her young age, she continued to write stories during her teaching career whenever she found time between making lesson plans and grading essays. The things that Revis loves the most, other than writing, include eating chocolate and traveling to exciting places. Her most favorite destination is London. Although Revis explored London while she was studying at London University, Malta is very close to her heart because it is the first foreign country that she visited. Before death comes to her, Revis wishes to see Jerusalem, Pyramids of Giza, and the Great Wall of China.
A popular book series written by author Beth Revis is known as the Give the Dark My Love series. It began in 2018 with the debut book entitled ‘Give the Dark My Love’. The Razorbill publication released it in 2018. Revis has mentioned the main characters in this book in the form of Nedra Brysstain, Greggori Astor, and several others. The setting takes place on a fictional island called the Lunar Island. Initially, Nedra Brysstain is introduced as a 17-year old girl living in the northern, rural regions of Lunar Island. She leaves her home to join the Yugen Academy and learn all the trades of medicinal alchemy. As she is the only student to join the academy with a scholarship, she does not blend well with the other matriculating children belonging to the most powerful and wealthiest families.
Nedra feels that she doesn’t fit at Yugen as the other students look at her with hatred and dislike. Greggori Astor is the only one who doesn’t behave with Nedra like others. His friends call him Grey. He finds himself immediately taken by the stubborn and brilliant Nedra Brysstain, who keeps herself immersed in her studies. It is important for all the students to study hard because the northern regions have been swept by a deadly plague, which is now headed in the direction of the cities. As the lives of her family members and all the other citizens of Lunar Island is put under risk, Nedra Brysstain is determined to find the plague’s cure. As the days pass by, Nedra and Grey grow closer.
With the spreading of the sickness and the increase in the body count, Nedra tries desperately to find the cure. She finds herself in the most dangerous corners of the alchemy and decides to attempt the forbidden practice of necromancy. Grey tries to stop her from doing so as it would endanger her own life, but Nedra doesn’t listen to him. She is more concerned about the well-being of the citizens than her life. Grey stands by her side throughout to pull her out from darkness if she gets stuck.
The next book of this series is called ‘Bid My Soul Farewell’. It was also published by Razorbill in 2019. This novel opens by showing that Nedra Brysstain has turned into a necromancer and set the Lunar Island in the course of healing. Her efforts have helped to eradicate the plague, but it has forced her to embrace darkness. As the healing process speeds up, Allyrian Empire’s leader, Emperor Auguste, decides to remove necromancy completely from the island. Grey finds himself in a dilemma because if chooses to side with Auguste’s plans, it will endanger the life of Nedra Brysstain, whom he loves very much. As he feels that he has already failed once to save her, Grey is willing to take that chance again.
On the other hand, Nedra is trying very hard to keep her revenants’ army under control, which is growing inhuman with each passing day. Finally, Nedra & Grey come together to face an even more dangerous adversary. If they don’t succeed, Grey fears that Nedra will be pushed to her necromantic powers’ darkest depths. Nedra is filled with the guilt of keeping the souls of the revenants imprisoned, but knows that there is no other option. She tries to find a way to free them as her sister is one among them and she does not want to lose her.
