Bill Clinton needs no introduction. Everyone knows him as the 42nd President of the United States. However, it might come as a surprise for Bill’s fans to learn that he is also an author and that he is actually in the business of producing fiction.

Bill Clinton’s star ascended when he became the President in 1993. He came into power as the Cold War winded down, and his status as a baby boomer president, the first of his kind, endeared him to many people.

A child of Arkansas where he was born in 1946, Bill attended Georgetown University and the University of Oxford. Bill came into power after beating George H. W. Bush in elections. He was one of the youngest presidents to ever take office at the time.

And he had the fortune to lead the United States through a time of peace and prosperity. Bill Clinton’s reign was characterized by America’s economic expansion. Besides becoming the first Democrat to be elected a second term in many years, some of his achievements in office include passing Welfare reform.

Bill’s term looked like it might end unceremoniously in 1998 when a scandal involving a White House employee with whom he was having an affair saw him get impeached. Bill was brought before a grand jury to answer a case of perjury, though he was eventually acquitted and allowed to serve his term to fruition.

Bill will be remembered for his decision to intervene in the Bosnian and Kosovo conflicts, not to mention taking steps to pit the United States against Iraq and its president, Saddam Hussein.

By the time he left office, Bill Clinton had the highest approval rating of any North American President since the Second World War. After leaving office, Bill went on to support various causes around the world.

Bill Clinton’s first published literary work was ‘Between Hope and History’. The book was published in 1996 and it was supposed to endear the President to the electorate as elections approached.

The book delved into the New Democratic Philosophy that Bill was pushing at the time. And like every president before him, Bill Clinton followed up the book with an autobiography in 2004.

‘My Life’ was released in 2004 and went on to sell millions of copies, this while earning Bill several million dollars in advance fees. The book covered the President’s beginnings, his journey into political office, his life after the Presidency and the various hobbies and activities that kept him busy.

The book was a big deal when it first came out. However, you would be hard pressed to find any enthusiastic reader that knows that particular title, or the title of any of the president’s books that he published in the years that followed.

In fact, you would be hard pressed to find anyone that thinks of Bill Clinton as an author. But strangely enough, that is exactly what the former President has become. It was a pretty big deal when it was announced in 2017 that Bill Clinton was partnering with James Patterson to produce a crime thriller called ‘The President is Missing’.

No one really batted an eye when rumors of Bill writing a book first started spreading. After all, it is the norm for ex-presidents to publish books, typically philosophical explorations of various topics.

When it was announced that Bill would be partnering with a renowned author, some people couldn’t help but perk up. However, it wasn’t until the internet exploded with news that James Patterson would be the author partnering with Bill Clinton that people finally got on board.

James Patterson isn’t just any other author. He is prolific for his thrillers. You do not partner with James Patterson to write long winded and boring political tomes. You partner with Patterson because you want to thrill and entertain with heart pounding fiction.

And that is pretty much what the author confirmed; that he and Bill were working on a fictional novel titled ‘The President is Missing’. It will be the task of Alfred A. Knopf and Little, and Brown and Company to publish the novel upon its completion in 2018.

The chances are high that you are trying and failing to think of a former United States President that wrote a fiction novel. What Bill Clinton is achieving is unprecedented. When the news first broke, Bill, Patterson, and everyone involved chose to remain scant on the details of the plot. Though, the little that could be said suggested elements of suspense, intrigue, and politics.

James Patterson and Bill Clinton are not being forced to partner out of necessity. They met several years ago while golfing and they have been friends ever since. Their collaboration can be imputed to the efforts of Robert B. Barnett, a lawyer that has worked with both authors.

Barnett thought the idea of Bill and James teaming up was brilliant. So he approached Bill and pitched the novel. Bill has been reading Patterson’s novels for a very long time. And as someone who loves mysteries and thrillers, he was enthused by the idea.

Anyone who knows the former President will tell you that he reads mysteries on a regular basis. Patterson did not hesitate to jump at the chance to work with him. And once both parties agreed to participate in the project, they immediately got down to work, with Patterson quickly creating the outline of the story and then proceeding to churn a few chapters out with the help of the president.

When he was reached for a comment, Patterson said that working with a former president was a highlight. Patterson accepted the collaboration because it allowed him to mine Bill Clinton’s firsthand experience as a United States President.

The collaboration has been hailed for the potential it boasts. Patterson is a nearly unrivaled storyteller. Few people have the ability to tell a story as effectively as the veteran. On the other hand, Bill Clinton has insight that Patterson doesn’t have. He has the ability to add authenticity to Patterson’s plot.
