Bill Willingham is a published author and illustrator, artist, and drawer of things.

Born in Virginia, this artist is known for working in the seventies to the early eighties drawing pictures that could be called fantasy ink. These were for the Basic and Expert level game rule books for the famous game, Dungeons & Dragons.

His father served in the military and during that time, his family lived in a number of places. These include the United States with California and Alaska as well as abroad with a total of three years staying in Germany. The author started out working at TSR, Inc., as one of their artists and was able to illustrate a lot of their role playing games and products.

He also wrote for other games such as Top Secret. He illustrated and wrote some of the Villains & Vigilantes game adventures in 1982 and was the artist that did the design artwork for an alien race on the video game Master of Orion.

Bill first got some attention for a series of comic books that came out in the eighties titled Elementals, and he wrote the comic and drew for it. The artist would contribute his own stories to the Green Lantern. He also began an independent comic series of his own called Coventry which was in black and white. The series released three issues. He also produced a series called Ironwood for publisher Eros Comix.

In the nineties, Willingham was able to establish himself working as a writer on a prolific basis once more. He was able to produce a thirteen issue series Pantheon through Lone Star Press. He also was able to compose two short novels that were about the modern version of the hero Beowulf and his various adventures. The novels were published by Clockwork Storybook, a writer’s collective based in Austin, Texas. He was also an original founding member of the group.

He also wrote his first fictional full novel. It was in the fantasy genre and was titled Down the Mysterly River. This was also published by the same writer’s collective (Clockwork Storybook). During the early period of the 2000s, Willingham started to write for the powerhouse DC Comics extensively.

He was back in the groove and wrote Proposition Player, a limited series pair that was concerning The Sandman’s character of Thessaly, a Greek witch. He also was the writer of the series titled Fables, which was quite popular. Fables won an award in 2003 for being the best when it comes to the categories of serialized story and new series.

The author says that he is “rabidly” on the side of being pro-Israel. He also states that from the start, Fables was intended to be a metaphor regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Despite this admission, he says that the series is not and will not become a ‘political tract’. He also asserts that characters who possess real ethical and moral centers exist in writing and that he won’t apologize for that fact.

He worked on a series called Robin from a period of 2004-2006 as well. He also worked to establish Shadowpact. This was a title spun off of his own limited series, Day of Vengeance. He wrote a spin-off of the Fable series as well called Jack of Fables.

The spin-off is also written with the help of Lilah Sturges. At a Comic Con International gathering in 2007, he also announced his intention to write Salvation Run. This was a miniseries regarding super villains that end up being banished all the way to a prison planet for their crimes. The planet is of course hostile to life. He transitioned the writing part of it to Sturges after only two issues due to illness.

The artist also worked on a four issue project titled DCU: Decisions. This miniseries dealt with the endorsement of the Green Arrow regarding a certain political candidate. He would collaborate with Lilah Sturges once more when he composed House of Mystery, a Vertigo series, as well as Justice Society of America for D on issue twenty-nine.

He agreed in 2009 to write for IDW Publishing’s Angel. He came out with an original story line that he entitled Immortality for Dummies. In 2013, at the NY Comic Con, the announcement was made that he would be writing a miniseries in seven parts on the behalf of Dynamite Entertainment.

The art would be done by artist Sergio Ferndandez Davila. The series was titled Legenderry and is intended to be steampunk and full of adventure. It includes public and licensed domain characters from Dynamite in what else but a classic steampunk setting. The series came out in 2014 in January. In January 2015, the collected edition came out.
