Black Ocean series by J. S. Morin
Author J. S. Morin writes the “Black Ocean” series. The series began publication in the year 2014, when “Salvage Trouble” was released.

The series has two spin offs. One called “Mercy for Hire” and the other called “Astral Prime”.

This is a science fantasy series that is set during the 26th century. It focuses on the Mobius and its motley crew.

“Salvage Trouble” is the first novel in the “Black Ocean” series and was released in the year 2014. The escape pods are gone. A distress beacon is still active. Chase off all of the pirates and the wreck will be theirs. What was a crime scene just moments before just became legitimate salvage, and fair game for one opportunistic starship captain. Carl Ramsey is that opportunist.

His misfit crew includes his ex-wife pilot, an outcast wizard from the Convocation, one drunk mechanic, and predatory bodyguard. On their very best days, they are one well-oiled machine and capable of taking any challenge on. At least in theory. If that actually happened, Carl would be just as shocked as anybody else.

In the meantime, they are a crew that is in need of terras, and the galaxy doesn’t give these out for free. Jobs come and they go, but the cost of fuel always chases a ship like its own ion trail. A good captain is able to keep his crew from getting dusted by pirates, keeps them from killing each other, and earning however they’re able.

Readers like the way you get to know these main characters through scenes depicting action and life on the Mobius, or both. The book has some fascinating characters and a pretty solid storyline, and readers had a fun time reading it.

“A Smuggler’s Conscience” is the second novel in the “Black Ocean” series and was released in the year 2014. The job is a delivery without any questions asked. The problem is curiosity is a lethal sin.

An easy pickup and delivery. No questions asked and nobody looks inside the cargo. All that it requires is one stealthy and fast ship and a crew able to keep their consciences and imaginations in check until the drop-off happens. The Mobius is up to the task, however, when the crew is unable to keep their curiosity in check, they are faced with a moral dilemma. Should they cut their losses? Contact the authorities? Or should they take the money and run?

Or do they get talked into the dumbest, most reckless, and the least profitable course of action possible? Doing the right thing.

This is a rich universe and the characters are compelling and individualized. Fans found this to be a fun mission with this crew, who all get developed further in this book. He does a fantastic job of creating these worlds and characters that fill his books with such emotion and adventure.

“Poets and Piracy” is the third novel in the “Black Ocean” series and was released in the year 2015. In a crime family, there is a thin line between the hit list and the Christmas list.

The crew of the Mobius takes on Bryce Brisson in order to bring in some easy cash, and they find themselves getting caught up in his business with Tanny’s estranged family: the Rucker Syndicate.

On top of that, Tanny has gone through her supply of drugs that she requires to keep up her enhanced marine physiology. Is Carl going to double-cross his family in order to make his payday or dive right into a trap that was not even meant for him? If he plays any of this wrong, he risks making enemies of some of the most ruthless gangsters on Mars.

Fans enjoyed this continuation of the Mobius crew’s ongoing awesome adventures with some outstanding characters. Morin’s style of writing is rather smooth and his plot is pretty straightforward, with some surprises along the way. There’s even some drugs, pirate queens, good ol’ smugglers, and magic involved.

“To Err is Azrin” is the fourth novel in the “Black Ocean” series and was released in the year 2015. She saved her brother’s son but killed her brother. Can a good deed really repay a blood debt?

A foiled bounty job results in the Mobius rescuing Mriy’s nephew, and they divert course for Meyang in order to deliver him back home. On her return, she is being challenged to a ritual hunt to earn back her rightful spot within the family. With the entire clan turned against her, where can she turn to for allies?

Yeah, she isn’t to thrilled about being stuck with any of them either.

Readers have grown to really care about each and every one of these characters in these books. Fans liked learning more on Mriy’s past this time around, and found this to be another great outing with the Mobius team.

“Alien Racer” is the fifth novel in the “Black Ocean” series and was released in the year 2015. The need for speed meets the need for greed.

Carl Ramsey, an ex-starfighter pilot and now captain of the Mobius, cannot watch race pilots without scoffing about the face that they haven’t ever faced hostile fire. When the warp-drive wizard and the ship’s mechanic cannot take it anymore, they goad Carl into entering an upcoming race to prove it. Carl packs both his bags and ego, and enters the Slide Slims Cadet Racer Challenge. With 250,000 terras prize money, it would be the crew of the Mobius’ largest score yet.

Of course, Carl isn’t only satisfied just racing to win. He puts a plan together for a much bigger score, dragging in one old squadron mate, an eliminated racer, and one unwitting corporate accomplice. With all these moving parts and Carl’s seat-of-the-pants plotting, what could even go right?

Could the Mobius crew keep it together just long enough to put together a large payday finally? Or is Carl’s ship, along with their plan, going to crash and burn?

These are characters that readers have gotten to like quite a bit over the course of five novels and really enjoy going on adventures with them in each exciting book.
