Brad Strickland is a renowned American writer of science fiction and fantasy novels. He is particularly popular for writing a number of book series and standalone novels of speculative fiction. Some of the most popular series written by him include Lewis Barnavelt, Johnny Dixon, Thaumia, Pirate Hunter, Grimoire, Wishbone, Academy, etc. Author Strickland was known for his collaborations with a number of fellow authors such as John Bellairs, Barbara Strickland, Thomas E Fuller, and a few others as well. All of his books have been released under the name of Brad Strickland except one book, which was published under the pen name of Will Bradley. The most widely held work of author Strickland in the participating libraries of WorldCat is the book called The Sign of Sinister Sorcerer, which is the last entry in the Lewis Barnavelt series originally created by author John Bellairs.
Author Strickland was born as William Bradley Strickland in New Holland, Georgia on October 27, 1947. Strickland got the chance to join the Georgia Governor Honors Program in 1964. This increased his love for reading and writing to a greater extent. The first professional story written by Strickland is called ‘The Third Grave’. It was featured in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine in 1966. His first attempt at writing a speculative fiction novel was ‘Payment Deferred’, which was published in Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine’s 1982 issue. The first full-length book published by Strickland was the 1985 novel called To Stand Beneath the Sun. Since then, he has penned more than 60 novels and over 100 short stories, independently as well as in collaboration. After beginning his career in the field of writing during the 1960s, Strickland took a break and did not publish anything for the next 30 years. Eventually, he started writing again and credits his wife Barbara, close friend Thomas Fuller, and a fantasy artist named Joe DeVito for motivating him to start writing again.
Starting from 1992, author Strickland finished the writing part of 4 Johnny Dixon and Lewis Barnavelt books that were initially outlined by Bellairs. In the next few years, Strickland added 9 more novels and brought both the series to a 12 volume set. Starting from 1996, Strickland began creating new stories based on the already established characters. He even contributed to the widely successful Wishbone series along with a number of other popular authors as well as his wife Barbara Strickland. In 2001, Strickland won Georgia’s Author of the Year prize. In 2002, he teamed up with Thomas E. Fuller to start the Pirate Hunter novels and the Mars Year One books. Unfortunately, Fuller did not live to see the publishing of all the books.
In addition to writing novels, Strickland works as an English Professor at the Gainesville State College located in Oakwood, Georgia. Strickland is also a member of a theatre company based in Atlanta. He writes, adapts, and acts in a number of drama projects of the theater company. Author Strickland uses the nom de plume Ken McKea to write thriller novels. He has penned the Jim Dallas book series under this name. Strickland considers the pseudonym an alter ego that lets him write stories different from his original style. Currently, Strickland is enjoying old age along with his loving wife Barbara. The couple is the proud parents of two grown children named Jonathan and Amy. Both their kids have made a name for themselves in their respective career fields of arts. Both Brad and Barbara are fond of pets. They have several dogs and cats at their home.
An exciting novel series written by author Brad Strickland is known as the Grimoire series. It is comprised of two books released between 2006 and 2007. Both the books of this series follow the adventures of a 12-year-old boy named Jarvey Midion. He gets unwittingly transported by his dastardly relative into an alternate world. Jarvey Midion overcomes the various obstacles in his attempt to set things right and return to his world. The debut book of the Grimoire series is entitled ‘The Curse of the Midions’. It was released by Dial Books in 2006. The novel opens by showing that Jarvey Midion visits London to attend the reading of a distant relative’s will. He hopes that the session will end soon and he will return home in a couple of days. But, things go terribly wrong in an unexpected turn of events.
Jarvey is not able to find his parents and suddenly finds himself at the center of a mystery that involves a magical book called Grimoire. As soon as he comes near the magical book, he gets transported to a new city named Lunnon. He realizes that he is all alone in a strange city. Jarvey comes across a group of orphan children, who call themselves the Free Folk. When one of the kids suggests him to use Grimoire to return to his world, he decides to team up with them. At every step, Jarvey keeps wondering if he can trust the kids, but has no other option than following their plan.
The next volume of the series is called ‘Tracked by Terror’. It was also published by Dial publication in 2007. This book features the lead characters in the form of Jarvey Midion, Betsy, and a few others. Initially, it is depicted that Jarvey Midion gets lost inside the pages of the magical book, Grimoire. The masters of the mysterious book keep conjuring ghostly worlds that don’t seem to have an end. Jarvey Midion joins his best friend Betsy in the mission of navigating through the ancient book and discover its secrets. Every time they get the feeling that they are about to get an answer, their nightmares force them to get surrounded by confusion. Jarvey wonders how can he fight the evil that he has not been able to comprehend so far. And the most important thing to worry about is the increasing temptations of the mysteriously powerful book. Both Betsy and Jarvey feel that they won’t be able to resist the temptations for long. This thrilling and fast-paced story of the suspenseful Grimoire series was liked and appreciated by many readers throughout the world. It mostly attracted middle-grade readers and entertained them from beginning to end.
