The American author Lora Leigh is a well known writer much beloved for her ‘Breeds’ series of novels that have gained some popularity over the many years. Set in a moonlit world of fantasy and romance, she is an author who’s much appreciated for her handling of erotica and scenes of a sensual nature. This is something she has become well regarded for, having become a highly established figure within her field. In the series itself, ‘The Breeds’ deals with its erotically charged subjects through the use of fantasy, as they base themselves around an underground race of genetically modified people, or ‘breeds’, who exist on the fringes of society. These animalistic creatures base themselves around their more primal urges and woe betide anyone that gets in their way. Doing whatever it takes to survive, they’re no strangers to passion as, not only are they strong, but they’re sensual too.
A large stir has been created by these books, as many readers have been attracted by Leigh’s easily accessible and populist style. Creating unique worlds for her readers to explore, she’s a well regarded figure thanks to her unique brand of escapism. With no signs of stopping anytime soon, this looks like it’s a series of books that’s set to continue.
The Man Within
Book two of her Breeds series, this novel finds itself already within the action as Lora Leigh is familiar with the territory. First being published in 2004 on the 28th of October, it helped further establish the world inside as it managed to create an environment that had previously been trodden for the readers. Providing them with the erotic sense of sensuality, it gives a unique take on the fantasy romance genre that is definitely adult in both its style and tone. Expanding on her universe further, it’s comfortable with the rules it has set itself making way for the action that is to follow.
At its heart this story, like all her stories, has a fairly sentimental tone that’s both romantic and heart-warming. Despite all the erotica that Leigh skilfully weaves into her narratives within this series, these stories are essentially love stories for their readers, something which they’ve come to appreciate as the series progresses. This story is similar as it follows much the same formula of the others, this time focusing on the protagonist of Roni as it features her tortured past and quest for redemption within the arms of another. Whilst there may be a number of erotically charged moments, these subside in what is essentially her dreams of finding love and happiness. Growing up, Roni was, unbeknownst to her, protected by a member of the breeds, as he’s taken care of her whilst simultaneously fueled her many fantasies and urges throughout her young adult life. He held her heart once and then he broke it, leaving her hurt vowing not to feel that way again and protect herself from letting it happen anymore. That’s when Taber turns back up and looks to reclaim her, as she discovers who and what he is, learning of his true nature as a breed that’s consumed with passion. Making his mark on her, she worries that he may not really want her, as she has concerns over being hurt emotionally again, despite her desire for him. As they soon bond they must struggle with this passion for one another, as they come to terms with the nature of their relationship and what’s really going on.
Will they be able to contain themselves, or will Taber and Roni end up giving in to their more baser urges of what they desire? Can they learn the true nature of their relationship and what passion truly means for the breed people? What will become of them both as they start to discover the man within?
Elizabeth’s Wolf
Following on from her last book, this novel seeks to continue in the world of the ‘Breeds’, as it charts their progress as a species. Initially published on the 25th of February, 2004, it was first brought to a warm reception thanks to Leigh’s previous two books that came before, this being the third. Building on this world further, it clearly displays a writer in her element with a firm grasp on the world she has now created.
Carrying on, this builds a new relationship that’s fraught with trouble from the outset as the couple work to overcome the many obstacles that are placed before them both. Thought to be dead initially, Dash is a soldier who’s brought back to life once again by Elizabeth who goes about teaching him that he’s not simply a fighting machine but so much more. Having marked him as her mate, he sets about protecting her as best he can being bound to her now, whilst using his exclusive set of skills to protect them both. Thinking he was alone, he soon discovers that he has also awoken something within her, which is her inner wolf and it’s soon time for this beast to come to the forefront.
Will they get to be together and can they overcome the differences that beset them from the outset? Can they survive the torment as Dash struggles for both their survival as they seek to exist upon the fringes of society? What is the secret that they hold within as she they both discover the truth of Elizabeth’s wolf?
