This book consists of short story contributions from the likes of Bill Pronzini, Stephen King, Ramsey Campbell, Kelley Armstrong, and Simon Clark. The stories tend to push the dark suspense and horror boundaries to a bleeding edge. Authors Richard Chizmar and Freeman have tried to present the stories in such a way it takes the readers well beyond the extremities of the mortal toil, and into irreality’s glimmering void. The authors have described the lead characters in the form of Jordy Verrill, Kara, Ingrid, Edward James Tolliver, Little Jimmy, etc. At the start of the first story, it is shown that a meteorite from the sky falls on the property of Jordy Verrill. He sees this as an opportunity to make handsome money. Jordy Verrill looks to broadcast the news all over and get the attraction of the media.

This way, he hopes that he will be offered money and will be interviewed by various news channels. However, nothing happens as per his expectation. The rock is not found to be a usual rock. There lies an uncompromising force within the meteorite piece that makes Jordy Verrill the first target. In the next story, the description is about the advice of paying less than one owes to others. The advice appears to be quite an easy one to understand and follow. But, Ingrid and Kara, the childhood friends, realize that they can never repay what they owe. Such debts are the ones that tender in blood.

In another story, Edward Tolliver becomes a fake mental patient and seeks asylum. He intends to live among the mentally unstable patients and behave like one in order to catch the invaders red handed. By doing so, he lands his life in a great danger. Later, a man awakens to find himself chained inside a vault. He has his neck tied to that of a psycho murderer. When the man sees this murderer, he knows that he is not going to last for a long time in the proximity of this dangerous beast. Little Jimmy’s story describes that he learns a cold truth after realizing that seeing something cannot land you in any trouble unless someone else is aware of what you witnessed.

The next installment of the series is called ‘Dark Screams: Volume 2’. It was also published by the Hydra publishers in 2015. The contributors of this particular book include Norman Prentiss, Richard Christian Matheson, Robert McCammon, Shawntelle Madison, and Graham Masterton. Freeman and Chizmar have shown how these writers have scaled new heights of suspense, grimmest fantasy, and horror. The central characters depicted include Neil Calder, Eleanor, C.S. Lewis, Dawn, and several others. Chizmar & Freeman have described the stories as having taken place in Nashville, St. Louis, New York City, Maine, At the beginning of the initial story, it is depicted that Neil Calder dies by drowning in a local pool. People consider his death as just an unfortunate event. But, Neil’s father seems to know something that others don’t know. He is shocked to find that Neil Calder returns on a summer night to take revenge from his murderer. The next description shows a flight taking off from St Louis and flying via Nashville goes missing. The family members and friends of the passengers wait anxiously at the destination airport’s gate. Just then, a clerk witnesses an inhumanly evil act that frightens her very much. Eleanor moves to Maine from New York City for renovating an ancient Victorian house that is considered a heritage.

She keeps herself busy with work all the time. However, she seems to have no idea that this particular job is going to take her several places that she has never even dream about. CS Lewis writes an informative article on a portal that leads to enchantment and magic. Dawn’s room consists of a wardrobe holds an intriguing that can lead her to death unless she solves it before time runs out. A rock n roll band from the 1970s, that did not exist in the real world at that time, makes an appearance out of nowhere and goes on an exciting trip covering many places.
