Bruce Hale is a published author.
Bruce grew up just outside of Los Angeles. His life changed suddenly in 1989 in a single week. That week, he became an entrepreneur and an author too. At the time he was employed by the phone company in a tedious job.
It was in this week that he was the receiver of three awards for his corporate newsletter. He was awarded a raise but then found out that if he wanted to enjoy it, he had only six weeks with which to do so. He had been downsized and lost his job. However, he was also assisting with a Hawaiian gift company that he had begun while on the side of his job as well as had self published his very own picture book designed for children.
At that moment Bruce realized that he had a choice. He could either seek out a different corporate job to work for or he could go after the dream that he had of being an official author. He decided to take a chance and go after it. It has paid off. He has not only become a full time author but has seen dozens of his books published through his personal publishing company as well as large publishers in the United States such as HarperCollins and Harcourt. He has written picture books, graphic novels, novels, and easy reader books.
Bruce had started writing while he was in Tokyo, living there. Once he moved to Hawaii, he continued to write. Before he fully got involved in the world of publishing, he had worked at many different jobs. He had been a magazine editor, a gardener, a toy maker, an actor, a DJ, and a corporate employee. He’s always been addicted to books and has wanted to become an author of children’s books ever since he was a kid in the fourth grade. Before that he wanted to be various other things including a pirate. Now he is officially an illustrator and an author.
Some of his popular series include the Chet Gecko Mystery series, the Underwhere series, Clark the Shark, the Monstertown Mystery series, Class Pets, and more. Some of his Chet Gecko mystery books have won or been nominated for awards. The Malted Falcon was a finalist for the Edgar Award. Another book in the series, Murder, My Tweet, won in the juvenile humor writing spot for the Little D Award.
The author is also a storytelling Fulbright Scholar. He was awarded a Fulbright Grant in 1998 to go to Thailand and study the folklore as well as teach story telling. While he is not fluent in the Thai language, he has a deep appreciation for the food there. He is a speaker and storyteller that is in demand internationally and in the United States. He speaks to all types of audience members, from students to boardroom employees. Bruce belongs to the National Speakers Association and has spoken at conferences, universities, and colleges, visiting libraries and schools all over.
Bruce loves illustrating and writing as well as traveling. He also enjoys performing. He has been on stage singing with Mezcal Martini, a Latin jazz band. He has also made appearances on television and on stage as well as in movies. Bruce was featured in The Ride, an independent film that came out in 2003. He played Harvey, an agent for a surfer.
Bruce also likes to go hiking, watch movies, or do some kickboxing when he’s not busy illustrating or writing. His favorite food to eat is sushi, while his favorite dessert is chocolate chip cookies. He has a large hat collection and his favorite color is aqua blue. He is married to his wife and they live together in Santa Barbara along with Riley, their dog.

This is a great series to check out if you’re a child or a parent or teacher looking for wholesome stories to read with your children of your class!
The Chameleon Wore Chartreuse is the first book in the Chet Gecko Mystery series by Bruce Hale. This is where readers meet the character of Chet Gecko for the first time.
When it comes to life, Chet Gecko enjoys a mystery more than anything. He loves the fee that he asks for taking on these mysteries as well, which happens to be stinkbug pie. One stumbles into his life randomly when Shirley Chameleon, another student in the fourth grade, asks him if he is able to take on a case.
The case here is Billy, her brother who happens to be missing. Chet agrees to take the case and thinks that solving it will be simple. But little does he know that the missing brother belongs to a larger picture. This picture may involve a junkyard dog, the Rat Sisters, and even Herman, a Gila monster.
Chet must get to the bottom of things quickly. If he doesn’t, it may end up resulting in a scenario where the whole school is humiliated. Chet might not even end up getting his fee, and that’s too bad. He’s really hungry and the pressure is on to solve the case. Can he do it? Read this book to find out!
The Mystery of Mr. Nice is the second book in the Chet Gecko Mysteries by author Bruce Hale. Chet Gecko is back.
Everyone mainly knows him for being an elementary school lizard detective. But it’s not just detective work for Chet, he also has some skills in art. When he gets sent to the principal’s office, he finds out about a new mystery.
