The Phoenix series written by author Bryony Pearce is comprised of a total of 2 books, which were released between the years 2015 and 2016. Both the books are set in a future time period where the fossil fuels have been depleted and piracy is on the rise at the high seas. The series’ central plot revolves around a pirate ship called Phoenix that keeps floating in the areas filled with debris.

Its crew members try to get hands at whatever useful they can get from the debris for remaining alive. Pearce has mentioned the chief characters in the books as Toby, Nell, and Ayla. Nell is depicted as the captain of Phoenix. She is very ruthless, mean, and aggressive. Ayla is Nell’s daughter and the second-in-command on Phoenix. She is a smart, good looking, and quite skillful with her sword. Pearce has shown Ayla as the potential love-interest of Toby. All the crew members on the pirate ship have tattoos of skull on their bodies and have their heads shaved. Only Ayla is an exception. Nell and Ayla are the only ones who really matter on the ship. Another very important character described in the stories is a mechanical parrot named Polly. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Phoenix Rising’. It was released by the Stripes publishing in the year 2015. At the start of this book’s story, it is shown that there is depletion of fossil fuels and collapsing of the democracy. In such testing time, the outlawed crew members on board Phoenix fight against other pirates for their survival.

They try to keep the ship afloat with whatever things they can scavenge or salvage from the sea. Toby has not been out of the ship ever and so he is unaware of life outside of the Phoenix. He seems desperate to go on an adventure and explore life on land. Soon, the Phoenix is under attack from other pirates, who make attempts to sink it. This emergency situation makes Toby realize that you don’t necessarily get what you wish for. He comes across the beautiful Ayla for the first time on the rival ship known as Banshee. Being a member of the sworn enemies of Phoenix, Ayla is not the one who Toby is supposed to love. This puts his life in a dilemma. He doesn’t know who he should trust. One thing that he knows very well that the future of Phoenix depends on the choices he will make.

The next popular installment of the Phoenix book series is called ‘Phoenix Burning’. It was also published by the Stripes publication in 2016. Once again, Ayla and Toby are depicted as the lead characters of the plot. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Toby & Ayla undertake a difficult mission of infiltrating the sun worshiping sect for stealing an important equipment that is required by their ship. For making this mission of stealing successful, the two decide to undergo a trial for getting chosen as the Moon and the Sun as these are seen as the elements of great honor for the said sect.

During the commencement of the trial, Ayla & Toby realize what they are going to lose if their secret mission ends up in a failure. Just like this pair, many other couples have enlisted themselves for the trial and they too appear to be equally desperate for winning the trial. Now, as per the rules of this trial, the participants are required to survive for a specified number of days by sitting under the scorching sun, be deprived of any sleep, and come out alive of a life-threatening maze. They wonder whether they will be able to do all this successfully. However, they know that if they want to do the impossible, they must stick together and work as a team.
