First published in 2022, Raine Down is the debut novel in The Shadow Guardians series by C.B. Samet.

Raine, a Shadow Guardian on the hunt for a notorious killer named Jor, crosses paths with FBI Agent Will Decker. In an attempt to protect Will from a deadly serpent, Raine shoots Jor and gets stabbed in the forearm. They rush to an emergency room, but the wound is gone, baffling them both.
Concerned for Raine’s well-being after losing a considerable amount of blood, Will takes her to a secure location. While he is asleep, Raine sneaks out to consult with her mentor, Usha Bakshi. Shortly after, Raine and Will find themselves unexpectedly assigned as partners in a joint agency operation aimed at capturing Jor.

As they work together, Raine gradually reveals the existence of supernatural elements and nine realms to Will, leaving him intrigued. On the other hand, Raine finds herself grappling with newfound feelings for Will. Will, a man who has never been one to commit to any relationship, struggles to understand his growing affection for Raine. Both keep their emotions guarded, and their approaches to solving cases differ significantly. Raine doesn’t hesitate to use lethal force when necessary, while Will prefers to apprehend criminals without causing harm.

However, Will harbors a secret that he’s reluctant to disclose, and it’s only when they encounter Jor, with both their lives hanging in the balance, that he finally reveals the truth. The mystery deepens as they try to fathom why Jor is targeting the descendants of the Vanir.

Raine Down is an engaging urban fantasy tale with a touch of romantic suspense. The story draws readers in from the beginning with its intriguing concept of Shadow Guardians, mingling supernatural elements with a suspenseful FBI narrative. This book offers a rich blend of elements, including crime-solving, mystery, danger, Norse mythology, secrets, chemistry, and thrilling adventures. Raine and Will are well-developed and likable characters, each with a strong sense of duty and a longing for a life beyond their work.

The fantasy aspects of the story are thoughtfully crafted, incorporating elements from Norse mythology while adding unique twists. The supernatural characters are not all-powerful and must navigate the challenges of living in the human world. Raine Down is an excellent start to the series, catering to fans of urban fantasy centered around monster-hunting.

Black Gold is the first book by C.B. Samet in the Dr. Whyte Thriller series. We are introduced to Dr. Lillian Whyte, an emergency room physician in a bustling Atlanta hospital on the verge of burnout. Her grueling schedule, often exceeding 80 to 100 hours per week, has pushed her to the limits. She’s dedicated to her work, doing her best to stabilize patients and ensure they receive the care they need from specialists and surgeons.

Lillian is known for her no-nonsense, straightforward approach, which tends to rub people incorrectly. When her boss strongly suggests that she take part in a medical mission to Kenya to rejuvenate her passion for medicine and alleviate her medical school loan burden, she reluctantly agrees.
Her journey takes her to a small Red Cross clinic in a rural area of Kenya within a U.S. military camp. Here, Lillian discovers a newfound sense of purpose. The local population dramatically depends on her medical expertise, and the young interns who’ve joined her mission benefit from her guidance and teachings. Additionally, Lillian encounters Sean Perkins, a Harvard-educated interpreter who assists her in communicating with patients and becomes an intriguing and attractive presence in her life.

However, Sean Perkins is not who he appears to be. In reality, he is Sean Jennings, an undercover CIA operative on a mission in Kenya to track down an elusive international oil thief known as Domino. This cunning criminal and his organization have been hijacking oil convoys, even attacking oil tankers at sea, stealing their cargo, and sinking the ships, leaving no survivors.

Domino’s true identity remains hidden behind a vague physical description and the nickname “The Frenchman.” Sean becomes suspicious when a wealthy French vineyard owner arrives at the military camp bearing essential medical supplies. Although everything seems legitimate, Sean’s instincts tell him otherwise, especially considering the numerous French expatriates in Africa.

Their worlds collide when Lillian and Sean return from a medical excursion to a native village and discover the military camp in ruins, with its inhabitants brutally murdered. It becomes evident that Domino ordered the destruction, fearing he had been identified. Now, Lillian and Sean must escape and evade capture as their lives hang in the balance.

Black Gold is an engaging mystery-thriller that introduces Dr. Lillian Whyte, a character with a no-nonsense approach to her work and unapologetic about her direct manner. Her frustration with patients seeking quick fixes rather than taking responsibility for their health is palpable.
While her approach may be harsh, it is sometimes necessary. However, her stern demeanor extends to her young colleagues, creating tension within the workplace. The author skillfully establishes Lillian’s mental state and her impact on those around her.

The novel is action-packed, with a thrilling plot that propels the story forward. Although there is some initial exposition to set up Lillian’s life and provide background on “Domino,” the narrative gains momentum quickly and maintains a relentless pace.

Readers will appreciate Lillian’s resourcefulness as she navigates dangerous situations and remains skeptical of Sean and the CIA’s involvement in the unfolding events. Black Gold promises an entertaining adventure, leaving readers eager to explore more of Lillian Whyte’s future escapades.
